You already said they "buy 50 t-shirts"... so why ask again how many t-shirts bought?? Question salah (wrong) lah... Or you mean 50 total = t-shirts + shorts?? Some of these assessment book questions are very poorly phrased. Edited January 28, 2012 by Sosaria

Rainman 1st Gear January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Typical method X+Y=50 12X+15Y=681 Logically it should buy one pair each for each member -> 681-50*(12+15) = still got some change to go mac donald.

Fondue Neutral Newbie January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Shorts cost $3 more than T-shirt. Total spent $681. If both cost the same at 12, then 50 pcs will cost 12*50 = 600. Balance 81. Since each shorts cost extra $3, Divide 81 by 3= 27. Therefore, T-shirt is 23, short is 27.

JJ_JJ Clutched January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Bro, I had written and published a book for such type of questions last year. In the school, children are taught the Guess & Check table to solve such problems. Visit my website ( exclusifmedia.com ) and you shall see some examples to help you decide on acquiring the book. Hope you enjoy it!! JJ_JJ

I was really thinking of how the "model method" taught at primary level can be used to solve this question, and you've shown the way. I know the guess-and-check method, but it seems to be quite crude, so I'm surprised it's actually taught as an acceptable method. It's only good for those kids who can multiply and add quickly because of the number of cases they must check. And also the kid must know how to systematically converge to the solution, else they'd be just blindly guessing and wasting a lot of time.
