Donut Supercharged January 27, 2012 Share January 27, 2012 Why can't we be more responsible for our mistakes, like Japan? TOKYO: The president and five other top executives of Japan's biggest mobile phone operator will take pay cuts to apologise for a series of network troubles, NTT DoCoMo said on Friday. The firm admitted that it has struggled to deal with growing data traffic as smartphones boom in popularity, and pledged fresh investment to tackle the issue. President Ryuji Yamada will have his remuneration reduced by 20 percent for three months while the other executives will take a 10 percent cut over the same period. "I deeply apologise to our customers for the huge trouble," Yamada told a news conference. The cuts were "a clear means of taking responsibility for causing the series of network malfunctions, and leakage of personal information," NTT DoCoMo said in a statement. The company's most recent network problem came on Wednesday after the company renewed equipment to boost data processing capability, leaving 2.52 million subscribers offline for several hours. In December, it suffered disruptions to its smartphone e-mail service, leading to a system glitch in which e-mail senders' addresses were replaced by those of other users. The firm plans to invest 164 billion yen ($2.1 billion) by March 2015 to beef up its network and try to stabilise operations "in line with the rapid increase in the number of smartphone users," it said. NTT DoCoMo is trying to grab a bigger slice of Japan's expanding smartphone market, but faces stiff competition from rivals Softbank and KDDI, both of which offer Apple's hugely popular iPhone, which it does not. The firm, which is part of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone group, separately said its net profit for the nine months to December fell 11.1 percent from a year earlier to 394.6 billion yen. Operating profit dropped 1.9 percent to 743.8 billion yen for the period on revenue of 3.17 trillion yen, down 1.1 percent. NTT DoCoMo slightly downgraded its full-year net profit forecast from 514 billion yen to 474 billion yen due to corporate taxation changes. ↡ Advertisement

Kyrios Turbocharged January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Ssshhhh..how dare we peasants ask our leaders to be accountable? The recent pay adjustment already take half of their lives liao... Oh yeah the pappy supporters will say that the US president has Air Force One etc and other non monetary perks whereas our dear leaders enjoy no such perks..I dare to challenge them.... Our leaders also have non monetary perks such as being able to be invited to sit on board big companies as their board of directors..go anywhere in public also have grassroot servants eagerly bootlicking them..so who says they got no non monetary perks other than the extremely high salaries.. Very weak arguments..

Bystander50 5th Gear January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Got someone lost billions of dollars in her shopping spree can still pretend that nothing happened. To her billions is nothing while we peasants are talking about hundreds to thousands of dollars daily. For her, they are talking about millions in their sales talk. Maybe she'll jump from her office after losing trillions? By then, the whole country will be in deep sxxt, our CPF gone.

Of course they can still take up the job of a toilet cleaner, ultimately it is still a job with a pay. We are being asked to lower our pay expectations to remain competitive. If they are so good, I don't see any reasons why they would be unemployable. Unless during their term, people already have seen so much of their screwups that no one dares to employ them. Look at George Yeo..still living a good life after he 'stepped down'..

Look at George Yeo..still living a good life after he 'stepped down'.. When people make sacrifices, they take it with their pride and does not even talk about it. MIW does it by making it a big bang, must let the whole world know. Seriously, if they feel that it is too much of a sacrifice, they can always quit, they are not forced to join politics at knife/gunpoint to serve the people. I'm sure they are many others out there willing to do the job at a much lower cost. Just look at the number of volunteers at old folks home, special needs school ... etc Do these volunteers ever complain about their sacrifice and demand hugh payout for their work done? Those MIW who mentioned and wanted compensation for their sacrifices should take a leaf from these volunteers and learn from them. I would say shame on these MIW. Kiadaw 6th Gear January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 (edited) By MIW, footballers must be making a VERY big sacrifices as well for becoming a public figures, Funny I never heard a footballer saying the magic words. From interview, most agree its a previlage, & thanks their lucky stars that they can make good money while doing something they love. At the minimum, they can go oversea without worry about their privacy. The MIW really make smack the face of the Oxford folks for the devalue of words like, 'Talent', 'affordability', 'sacrifices'. For me it is fairly simple, if you accept most of the windfall for success (like GDP bones, on top of the many months bonus), especially the 2-3 months rates for the main employees of the government sectors, than you have to take up most responsibility when something goes wrong.
