then someone pushed my shoulder and I opened my eyes: 5 hours had passed by .....

Went thru it five years ago for my spine operation.

The gas mask on....count 1,2,3,4,5 knocked out already. Totally quick n painless.

Woke up four hours later operation over. Amazing chemical.

If can die this way....it's quite painless n you don't even know you are already dead!!

They say we will see our own body lying in bed when after our spirit fly out from it. :o

The scary thing is that unlike sleep, there's no dreams just a total blank/void. Maybe, this is what death feels like, a big black nothingness.

Mine was not general, but was semi conscious for wisdom tooth extraction. Jab in the the mouth, a sniff of gas mask, then was like drunken feeling, super high, muffled hearing and total numbness mouth.

You know the scariest part of this? Somehow during my second general anesthesia application, suddenly i have this fear of things go heywire - what if dosage is too little that i could still feel the pain of cutting but just can't control the body, like in some horror movie? Just a fleeting thought but you just gotta have faith. If you read more, this kind of thing did happen before.

But the feeling before knockout is very addictive. The nurse might ask you to count while doing deep breathing, then there is this hissing sound, and you will really feel more and more detachment from this world as you breath harder. The ceiling will become more and more blur. The dins in background will be fainter and fainter till you hear no more. Along the way, you will feel you are losing the control of limps as you struggle. You can even hear and feel the nurse talking and gauging if you are still concsious. And that is when the fear sets in that what if you do not lose consciouness as supposedly should? Scary isn't it?

But after recover consciousness not so enjoyable as will have motion-sickness. Vomit will help though. Then you will have very vivid memory of the whole event, and develop phobia if you worry too much if you have to go throught the anesthesia again.

That means the injection did not managed to knock you out, so the gas mask was applied. I wonder which is more harmful? Many years back I was told to count sheep instead, after the injection seems to take too long for their patience [:p] Finally I fell cold and was knocked out. Woke up and almost got up, half way as they wheeled me back to the Ward [laugh]
