Man discharged for assaulting woman at Jurong East

By Fiona Low

A businessman who was initially charged for assaulting a woman at Jurong East MRT station was acquitted on Friday.

Bradley Joseph Furness, 47, was charged after he allegedly grabbed 22-year-old student Tan Ching Hong in a headlock and pushed her to the floor in December 2010.

The Australian who is a Singapore permanent resident, also faced two other charges for mischief and causing hurt. He was accused of elbowing a 45-year-old man in the face in March 2011.

He was given a discharge amounting to an acquittal after the prosecution called for a withdrawal of all three charges. No reason was given by the prosecution for the withdrawal.

SINGAPORE: A man who allegedly pinned a young woman to the ground at Jurong East MRT station in December last year now faces assault charges.

Forty-eight-year-old Bradley Joseph Furness, a Singaporean citizen, allegedly did so as he thought that she was trying to steal his mobile phone.

It is believed the company director grabbed 22-year-old Tan Ching Hong by the neck and pushed her to the floor in what the media then described as a "David versus Goliath situation".

Furness is nearly two metres tall while Ms Tan stood about a head shorter than him.

Earlier, media reports also said that Ms Tan suffered minor injuries including redness on her neck following the alleged incident.

Separately, Furness is also believed to have assaulted a 45-year-old man on March 7.

He allegedly elbowed Jonathan Yeo Wee Liong in the face outside Nanyang Primary School on Coronation Road at around 4pm on that day.

Furness is also accused of one count of mischief. It is believed that he had lifted the windscreen wiper of Mr Yeo's car with the intention of damaging it.

The case has been adjourned to August 18.

If convicted of assault, for each charge, he could be jailed up to two years and fined a maximum of S$5,000.

And if found guilty of mischief, Furness could be jailed up to a year and fined.

Another news said one Nigerian killed a girl in Singapore....only get 12years jail.

Not even hang...or 24years.....but a discounted 12years.

I guess my perception of the strict law is wrong.

This place is very welfare and caring and giving yellow ribbons many chances.

definitely, out of court settlement, charges drop.

already got records on file, this guy wont learn his lesson.

a coward who picks his victims

but his victims are equally lame to settle out of court.

i'd rather see him go to jail.

He probably offered her $30k. To him, $30k is nothing. For a 22 year old girl, it is probably one year's salary.

Poor always get bullied, raped, abused then everything settled with money. Such is the world, especially in Asia.
