Jefkking Clutched January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 (edited) Belting have it's life span so when due for replacement, just replace it or else it'll caused engine over-heated (If fan belt burst), timing belt burst (If timig belt burst) & resulting valves damages and casued you couple of hunderd to S$ 2K for repair. So, what's the point of dressing spray on beltngs ?? (With dressing on belting also can create belting irritating noises due to loose of contact between beltings & pulleys & most importantly you'll also lost some of your engine power too) Edited January 16, 2012 by Jefkking
Jim 1st Gear January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 The shop next to Tanly in Waterloo Centre sells belt dressing sprays. Claims to improve power, fuel efficiency etc, but I didnt buy from them. Feel obligated to pass this along as they spent quite a bit of time identifying for me the $1.50 lightbulb I needed, which was the only thing I bought from them. That said, shouldnt squeaking sound indicate it's time for a belt change? At least that's what my mechanic claims.... time for a change if the belt squeaks when wet. Qms Neutral Newbie January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 Don't waste money with belt dressing spray. Change belts as and when necessary. They don't need any dressing, neither do they like chemical added to them. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/dayco-qa/
Escksu Clutched January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 Applying this belt spray dressing will it cure the chic chic sound when the engine is start up? Or are there any other problem? Yes, it does. But its only a temp solution. As belt ages, it will lose its tension and hence it will be noisy. It would be good to spray + adjust the belt tension as well. (With dressing on belting also can create belting irritating noises due to loose of contact between beltings & pulleys & most importantly you'll also lost some of your engine power too) It largely depends on engine design. For my car, the water pump runs on timing belt. Hence, no problem if fan belt snaps. I will lose power steering and AC. Alternator stops running but I still have battery. As for timing belt, that one also depends on engine design. Some are non interference engines. Hence, there will be no valve damages.
QQDreamer 4th Gear January 16, 2012 Author Share January 16, 2012 i saw it in the other thread here saying chic chic soudn during car start up and subsequently gone is because of pulley alignment problem? Also it could be due to belt tension torque not sufficient hence the chic chic sound instead of squeaking sound. squeaking sound is very loud compare to chic chich sound. 5936 1st Gear January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 Without functioning water pump, coolant temp will surge within minutes. It's not those end of world situation, but also a kind of emergency But at least you could drive safely to road side to safely shut down engine. You would have plenty of warning signs to tell you when belt burst= Heavy power steering, altenator not charging. Dont depend on aircon, it's too slow. by the time you realise AC not working, it's too late already. Normally, there should be some whipping/ loose debris sound for split seconds. 5936 1st Gear January 16, 2012 Share January 16, 2012 I am using Crown Drive & belt dressing. So far sprayed twice only. Sprayed when new, and 1-2 years another application. Almost time to change belt 86K already. Got one on standby. These spray can should come in single shot can. So much left. I think it will outlast car COE, or leak from can in a few years time. Dunt overspray, it will attract sand and dust, which causes friction.

QQDreamer 4th Gear January 18, 2012 Author Share January 18, 2012 dun need to change belt and dun need to buy spray but when start up chic chic some come and after drive off and warm up is ok. So still need to change or dont need?
Qms Neutral Newbie January 18, 2012 Share January 18, 2012 but when start up chic chic some come and after drive off and warm up is ok. So still need to change or dont need? Chic chic sound is due to the belt being cracked. Look carefully and you might see the splits. If you put belt dressing, you are causing the belt to slip and covering up the sound. Your belt still need to be changed, unless you are happy with a cracked belt and the sound being covered up. ↡ Advertisement
