Etnt Turbocharged January 15, 2012 Share January 15, 2012 (edited) Paternal grandfather : Ye Ye Paternal grandmother : Ma Ma Maternal grandfather : Gong Gong Maternal grandmother : Po Po For great grandparents: add Tai in front, and deduct 1 repeated syllabus. eg. Tai Ma Paternal Aunt: older than your dad is Gu Ma, while younger is Gu Jie Maternal Aunt: older than your mum is Yi Ma, younger is Ah Yi Paternal Uncle: older than your dad is Ah Pak, younger is Ah Sok Maternal Uncle: older than your mum is Kau Fu, younger is Ah Kau Substitute for order in family as necessary. Tong is for paternal cousins, Biu is for maternal cousin, substitute as necessary. This should settle most of the elder addressing needs in CNY. Piyopico Supercharged January 15, 2012 Share January 15, 2012 To add on. Ah Pak wife is Kum mou. Still got quite a few, Cantonese seems to have the most terms. Er wrong, should be Pak mou. Kum mou is your mother's brothers' wife. Actually not that easy to remember.
Blackmore 1st Gear January 15, 2012 Share January 15, 2012 Er wrong, should be Pak mou. Kum mou is your mother's brothers' wife. Actually not that easy to remember. Alternatively can be Pak leong (伯娘), that's the old salutation we use to call my father's elder brother's wife. Sounds younger than mou. When I was young, I was totally confused with the rank structure in cantonese as it was very specific. Imagine if you have a biu jie who was then 30 years old with offspring of the same age as myself when I was 8 refusing to address you as uncle. In most situation; many would consider that scenario an absurd joke but in the old days it was common.
