fire crackers were banned in Singapore in the 1970s

anyway i think racial harmony was at its best 15/20 years ago, where the Malay and Indian bus drivers would cover for the Chinese drivers during CNY, and vice versa during Hari Raya and Deepavali

now not the case because... many chinese married malay or indian or vice versa....

wife chinese wants to celebrate CNY, hubby malay wants to celebrate hari raya... wau hahaha so no one to cover during all this holiday

Turbocharged

In the past, if you travel to asia countries for CNY, many places were closed and you have no shopping, no meal, quite miserable...

On the other hand, when i was in some kampongs in Malaysia, the people enjoy themselves with home cook food, simple activities like gambling, fire crackers, or just catching up. Missed those simple lifestyle whereas over here, many rather rush and squeeze in the malls

What will happen in Sg as our Chinese foreign worker go home for CNY?

It almost CNY soon and many China workers are gg home for the season.

We rely on these workers right? How now? Will we be able to survive the weeks without them?

CNA already reported that Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre was damn filthy - dirty tables and used plates and utensils everywhere.

I hope the rest of sg doesnt kenna like this.

Shortage in cleaners leads to mess

SINGAPORE: It's less than a fortnight to the Lunar New Year and many foreign workers have started heading home for the festive season.

Manpower shortage in the foreign worker-reliant cleaning industry has left one hawker centre literally in a mess.

Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre greeted patrons on Tuesday with dirty tables littered with used plates and utensils.

Hawkers said the problem started when their previous cleaning contractor terminated its service abruptly on 30 December 2011.

Anticipating a big crowd during the Lunar New Year holidays, some hawkers decided to fork out their own money to hire temporary cleaners.

Others switch to using disposable utensils.

According to the Chinatown Business Association, a new cleaning contractor was roped in on January 6, at a 40 per cent hike in their monthly fees compared to their previous one.

But the situation has not improved.

Hawkers said the cleaners are still settling into their new working environment.

And they fear the situation might get worse.

That's why i am one of those who travel to M'sia kampung during CNY.. [:p] I still find Kampung life more condusive..

I'm saying after CNY and beyond ... make it a point to clean after you leave the table.

Seriously, don't know what's the big deal here. If you live in Malaysia, and work in KL, the Chinese in KL will also take 1-2 week leave to balik kampung. Similarly, this is also the case for the Malays during Raya. If you live in a U.S. city, most places will be closed on Christmas Day including Asian restaurants, my neighbourhood's trash were not cleared for a whole week.

If you cannot tolerate letting workers take time off to spend time with their family during the festive season, I don't know how you will tolerate anything different from oneself. Didn't we have 3.8 tonnes of trash on New Year Eve alone ? Dirty tables and used plates also got to do with the diner habits ? Paying only S$4, and leave used tissue and bones on the table, not returning plates, .. and I also saw some businesses just leave their trash in their back alley or along the walkways, some not even packed in trash bags.

All kuay liaos shut down. All semicon production lines shut down. All restaurants shut down. All universities will be empty from students and professors.

Public transport will be less strained during CNY~ [laugh]

Don't need to be FT to balik kampung. Local Chinese from smaller towns and villages also need to balik kampung. 40% are Chinese and majority are from other states.

If you go to any 1st tier cities in China, it is the same. Only the locals stay put, and most of the workers go back to their home town. It is known as "Spring Migration" -- the biggest annual migration of people in the world.

You look at our own hawkers and neighbourhood shops, most of them do not close shop except during CNY. It is also the only time of the year they take a break.
