Subject: Puzzle

Three men went to a hotel to share a room.

The clerk asked for $300.

Each man paid $100, making up the $300.

The hotelkeeper then decided to allow a discount for the day,

charging only $250 for the room.

He told the clerk to return $50 to the three men.

The clerk pocketed $20 for himself.

He gave the remaining $30 back to the three men.

Each man took back $10.

Therefore, each man paid $100 - $10 = $90 for the night.

$90 x 3 = $270 + the clerk's $20 = $290.

Question: Where has the remaining $10 gone?

The last line in your maths problem is a PAP accounting type sentence

It should be the 3 men paid in the end $100 - $10 = $90 each, x3 = $270

so they paid $250 for the room and $20 for the clerk 'commission' = $270.

each thought they had a $10 discount, so total discount is $30. $30 + $270 = $300

the missing $10 in your first posting is now with Temasek Holdings, but it will take 50 men years to find it

The puzzle is here in this sentence.. "$90 x 3 = $270 + the clerk's $20 = $290."

Simply put, the clerk's $20 was double counted.. The clerk's $20 is already inside the $270.. So its just $270+$30=$300

Turbocharged

Let's see.

Initial cost 300

clerk return 30

discount cost 300 - 30 = 270 (250 for hotel and 20 fir clerk)

270 / 3 = 90 each

No 10 dollars missing!

$$$ pocketed cannot be declare leh. It's already part of the $270 dollars. Misleading information like those in the news.

270 minus 20 equals 250.

250 is the price for the room.

But instead, the question setter went to add the twenty back

is correct [thumbsup][thumbsup][scholar][scholar]
