In this climate of uncertainty, recession and rising joblessness now... many people (just take a look at the USA) would WISH they can be "stuck" inside their job, rather than finding themselves retrenched. Looks like our economic climate here still doing well...
13177 Hypersonic January 3, 2012 Share January 3, 2012 Sometimes retrenchment also consider a good thing, i heard a few of my friends and colleague who got retrenched before, they were like striking TOTO! Some of them even didnt touched the retrenchment amount until today, as they managed to find another job within 3 months!

Youth92 2nd Gear January 3, 2012 Share January 3, 2012 This is a thread I will always come back to. I, too need a guidance in my career. I'm still younger than TS though, turning 20 this year, yet to serve NS. If results are good, I want to further my studies upon ORD. If not that good, I want to take part-time degree. I'm currently pursuing Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specializing in power and control. Any potential companies out there that I have to look out to? And to go for local or international companies?

Questions: 1) Looking at the job web (jobstreet, jobDB etc.) noticed that there are posts from direct employers, and those from agents like recruit express... What is the different ? Anythings i hav to look out for ? 2) Am graduated with diploma in mechatronics engineering, Is advisable to take up sale engineer or service engineer position ? what is the remuneration ilike ? 1- No much diff. Only you don't know who are the actual employer till the day of the interview. Also, most agencies filter your information for the employer. So if your asking is too high. Very likely they won't pass your resume to them. 2-Both of these jobs are very competitive (with FT). Most of the sales engr i know are not S'poreans. Those who are, are mainly in companies where customer look for them (not the other way around). Service engineer depends on the company. Some i know gives really good pay/benefits while most are only so-so. Personal experience, for 1st job, go for big companies with good pay. The first basic pay you get will be the minimum when you jump in the future. This benchmark will be important for you. The way SME and MNC operates very differently. You will learn alot of things in a very short period of time in a SME while in MNC, things are much more organized, so you will learn lesser things (no shortcuts) unless you change your job title. You cannot expect to do career planning with 2 questions and some general comments. Each person who replies you here brings with them personal experiences, and most will be limited to their own area of expertise as well as strengths and weaknesses. I would suggest a 5 point approach as the most basic starting point - 1. Forget about getting your dream job. Accept a job that is within the scope of your training or interest. The best you can hope for as a first time employee is to get a job you can do as well as interested in. 2. You can visit sites like jobsDB, Jobstreet or monster. My advice is to visit a job aggregator like www.indeed.com or www.careerjet.com. The 2 sites I mention will pull all the relevant jobs (according to search parameters) from every other site. 3. Put in several years to learn the specifics of your trade (whether sales or technical) and become really good in it. 4. Do not complain, stay positive and volunteer for everything. Expect to be bullied, taken advantage of and exploited. Its okay. You're learning. You can't run the store until you've swept the floor. 5. At the end of your 3-4 year, you can come back in here and ask for advice again. Good luck Disclosure - I'm in recruitment.
