KARTer 2nd Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 Who cares about the fail safe of the system? It is their personal fail safe that is important. They know they can cut corners and even mess up and their fail safe is their backing, their pay package even if asked to leave, not fired... Best part, people can stomp and complain in forums all they like, tomorrow's golf game is still on. and dont forget pple like mbt will still enjoy his pay, and later, his pensions until he dies... many more endless Good Years for them......... and the 60.1 should be happy like fish ↡ Advertisement
Jtay 1st Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 Maybe it will be cheaper to build a diversion canal to the underground tanks rather than to station the expensive pumps which require maintenance & power/diesel to run. But that will still be quite some time away so folks in Liat Towers have to "bear with us" till they find a suitable measure to alleviate the flash flood problem. I think even with underground tanks, you need pumps to remove the water after the rain so that the tanks are ready to catch the next burst of rainfall. But yes, the idea of underground tanks certainly sounds like a feasible one. Btw, I recalled reading a book on Singapore's environment issues one or two years ago, and if i remember correctly, there is a underground tank in one of the estates in the eastern part of Singapore (not too sure if anyone can recall the exact name of the estate). The idea was actually quite good, where the tank was located below a school field to optimise land use, and pumps were used to empty the tank after the rain. Lychee_boi Neutral Newbie January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 (edited) I feel that 313 Sommerset should have been built in another location. Did you all noticed that the floods happen only AFTER the Stamford Canal (the one outside the Sommerset MRT, is that right?) was partially sealed up so that 313 can be built above it. It was a mistake as the sealing of part of the canal means rainwater will take a longer time to clear away, thus leading to the flood. Just my opinion ah.. I'm no PUB Engineer. EasyGoing 2nd Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 cannot, why? PUB also calculate Orchard Rd won't flood but it did, we have the evidence. So, engineers calculate pump capacity oso cannot must have evidence.

Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 My point exactly. It is as if the Pandora's Box has been opened with all kinds of planning c*ckups you normally see in third-world countries happening right here & all the man has to say is "please bear with us"? Wonderful. Like what some called it sweeping under the carpet

Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 for years we have been told by the rulers that sgp has progressed well and achieved much under their care and we are always ahead of our neighbours.... now?..... sgp has slid to the levels, or maybe lower, than the same neighbours..... i expect the same rulers be honourable enough to come out to the front and admit it plus make a promise they will have all fixed by a deadline or target date, but instead, what have we heard so far? ................ investigations? (fair enough, they may need to find out what they should have done in the first place to prevent these failures) lets wait and see if they take forever to investigate They make it looks more like absconding than investigating
Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 i have an idea that might alleviate the situation a little. it can form part of the emergency response plan. we all know that liat towers and lucky plaza had been plagued with floods for n years now. authorities and building management need to do something about this. previously excuse of rubbish slowing water flow, stamford canal working at 100% etc. were parameters that resulted in or worsened the floods. why not consider deploying say 5 fire engine trucks with empty water tanks and then draw the water from the canal? that should buy some time in slowing the flood and improve flood recovery times. while the canal widening is ongoing, this could form part of the sop to minimise recurrences. can probably activate a few stations and draw water from different points of the canal. workable? Next, traffic jams due to fire trucks deployed to flood pump water (may need a few hundreds of them, which we have not yet bought). Of course if pump to Singapore River, it will backflow to Orchard Road again. Just play Merry-Go-Round with the water.

No offence, i don't mean to sound rude. I may be totally wrong, but here's my take on this. I am not a PUB engineer either, but being an engineer by training, I find it hard to accept such co-relations without concrete evidence. It's like saying after the MBS was built in Apr 2010, the floods in Orchard started appearing because the design of MBS looked like a stranded ship on top of the building. In logic theory, this is known as a fallacy that correlation proves causation. Having 2 events occuring does not mean a cause and effect relationship. Anyway, back to your point. If the 313 is a cause, perhaps the floods should be in the vicinity of 313 rather than in Tanglin or Liat towers or lucky plaza? Furthermore, the canal has been mostly covered all this while, and I doubt covering an additional section of the canal would cause much difference. I am more inclined to believe that the cumulative effects of urbanisation, increased rainfall (as what others have pointed out already) are the main causes of what we are seeing today

Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear January 4, 2012 Share January 4, 2012 haha, we can be the Venice of South East Asia Somehow I believe it could have something to do with being Elites' arrogance/ignorance that they only looking high and low for the most expensive method/solution Ever spoke to my MP that sometimes there can be more than one solution to solve a problem. We need not have to always only apply the most expensive method/solution. I believe PUB employs many engineers (I am not here to critisize any engineer), but PUB seems to make little use of engineering expertise they got . I wonder if PUB got no idea how to apply their engineers' expertise. Usually we engage a Plumber to clear chokages. Perhaps PUB should engage Plumbers instead. Plumbers have proven expertise worldwide.
