hahaha....

here's something more closer to home...

3 friends rent a hotel room = RM30

each one came up with RM10

= RM10+10+10=RM30

it turns out, on that day, there was a special offer at the hotel

rent of hotel room = RM30-RM5 = RM25

so...rent of room is now RM25..leaving a balance of RM5

the girl at the hotel reception had to return the balance of RM5

to the 3 friends but dunno how to split the money...RM5 divide by 3 =???

after a while...she decides to return each of them RM1.

RM1+1+1=RM3

& the balance of RM2 is given as tips to the reception girl...

so....to summarize....rent of hotel room started as RM30...

each one of the 3 friends cough up RM10...

=RM10-RM1 (money returned by the reception)

=RM9 X 3(the 3 friends) = RM27

=RM27 + RM2 (the tip money to the reception gal) = RM29

now....where did the RM1 go???

*pardon my translation....taken from a MY site....

The key lies in the fact that the money paid to the gal is not considered a net inflow, but an additional outflow in addition to the RM25 required.

The total outlay needed for Room + Tips is $25 and $2 respectively, and as such the total net outflow borne by 3 jokers = ($25 + $2 = $27, shared equally by 3 = $9 ea)

The accounting entry would be

Expense - RM30

Discount (Gain) on expense (RM5)

Net Expense - RM25

Additional Expense - RM2

Total Expense - RM27

Expense attributed from each user = 33.33% of $27 ~ RM9.

There's no link between the return of $5 (of which each person gets back $1 and the Hotel Reception $2) and your equation of: ($10-$1)x3 + $2 = $29

If you wanted to write the equation, it should be:

Each paid $10 so: $10 x 3 = $30

As $5 was returned to them, total sum now makes it $30 - $5 = $25

Making it easier to split the money, they each took $1 and had $2 to spare (which they gave the receptionist)

So they spent $25 + $2 = $27

Effectively, the equation will be $25 + $1 x3 + $2 = $30.

It's just how to play with the equations to make it seem as if $1 went missing

Yes that is correct. Each person paid RM 9 x 3 = RM 27

Out of which RM25 (room) + RM2 (gal) = cash outflow of RM27.

So complicated for what?

It's a simple thing.... the RM2 was double counted, that's all.
