It seems very hard to find good used car dealers in Turf City.

There's bound to be a few black sheeps in the flock...you just have to look really hard to find the good among the bad apples. [laugh]

Sigh...That's why many people would rather buy new....at least protected by lemon law and not hoodwinked by bad second hand car dealers spewing sweet promises before deal and spewing vulgarities after your purchase when you haveissues with thecar u bought from them.

Ya many pple go into the biz thinking very easy to make money.

When ty encounter real life experience, ty get desperate n start to think up all sorts of dishonest ways to improve sales.

I always very careful when buying a 2nd hand car. Check the car carefully n observe the dealer n ask fr everything in "black n white". No verbal promises accepted.

So far I hv been able to spot the crooks n cheats n walked away b4 I was sucked in by their dishonest words. [mad]

Looks like the industry is getting from bad to worse. [sweatdrop]

Its also due to our laws. There is no protection fr consumers here so these pple feel free to cheat n swindle pple left right n center. [furious]

sometimes it takes 2 hands to clap.

other than my first car purchase where i paid "school fees", my subsequent purchases were very smooth. no cheating at all.

morale of the story is do your homework. read up on forum on the pitfalls. know what you are expecting before you walk into showroom. once the salesman see that you know what you are toking about, they will not try any tricks on you. and golden rule is - everything black and white, dun verbally agree.

common sense always prevails.

Yes. I always do my homework n dun trust the salesman.

Like that I usually walk away with a good deal n leave a happy customer.

If I sense the salesman is trying to con me, I just walk away. [cool]

Could we request Pisces69 and Shanhz to share your checklist of do's and don'ts when it comes to buying hand cars please? I am sure newbies forumers like me will learn a lot. I have bought 2nd cars before and wished there were specific advice on things to look out for. My last 2 cars were new, but with current coe prices, it looks that the next ride will be 2nd hand, when my current car go 'up lorry'.upon coe expiry.

Like what I said. Always do yr homework.

Chk the market price of the car u wan to buy then start yr search.

I wil go tru all those classifieds n only bother with those in the market price range. Then I call n find out more n if OK, I wil go there to see the car n test-drive.

Once I am happy, we tok abt finance n Ins etc n see what freebies or other good stuff I can get b4 I sign.

Chk all docs carefully b4 signing n get a copy fr yrself.

2nd hand car u must chk condition to make sure no serious accident b4.

Only if u really happy, then u sign docs. [nod]

That also important. I bought last time from Car Times. Not too bad but the ger who sell me the car now no more there.

I always careful on who is the person I buy from. Dealer can b good but if the salesman dishonest, he sometimes take all the deposits etc n disappear. I only issue crossed cheque to name of the dealer company n never cash or chq to salesman name.

Then u hv to pay a second time.

I know some pple who even give cash to salesman. Wah I see that very dangerous.

Rule of thumb for me. The digits on the odometer on a used car are ALWAYS bogus until I see a full legitimate service history, with well-spaced out service intervals showing a gradual increase of mileage.

One single receipt issued last month for an oil change from a so-and-so workshop isn't enough to convince me of legitimate mileage.

But usually reputable used car dealers charge a higher price for their cars. I guess this is the trade-off from less hassle later on....

Ok to share my experience.

Always buy AD car with service history. Call to check to make sure mileage genuine. Rule of thumb is 20k or less per year, dun get too high mileage. Too low also not good.

Bring to AAS or your own mechanic to check for accident or major wear and tear. For major wear and tear, nego more discount.

If u put deposit, not more than 1000. Dun listen to crap about minimum how much the co accept or what. Proper dealer will not mind the difference. Black and white write down if major accident affecting chassis or engine or major component, full refund of deposit. If loan not approve also full refund.

Agree to all costs upfront, be very firm if they agreed all in price and then suddenly pop up admin cost or whatever. Walk out if they chut pattern.

Case trust regulated 500 max admin fee. If they ask for more, fly kite.

Confirm who arranging loan and insurance. If u arrange yourself, they may ask u top up abit. That is fine as long as u can get cheaper ins.recently i bot a car, i got aviva ins only 400plus ayear comprehensive. Even my dealer agree he cannot get this rate anywhere. I top up 200 to him to compensate him in lieu of insurance comm. this was agreed upfront also.

Paying cash. I paid full cash for my car, 30+. To make sure no hanky panky, i ask dealer to give me receipt indicating full payment made. I also insisted immediate transfer of car but he say need half a day. But thats fine becoz i can drive the car away immediately so i dun lose anything.

I dun care which dealer i buy from usually. Reputation not enough. For me, having a sense of how honest the dealer and salesman is more important. This i cannot teach u guys. Common sense lah. If dun feel good, then walk away.

Ok, thats about what i can remember.

Good luck.

Neutral Newbie

You mean you also bought car from First Automobile?

Yes mate I did. Still feel sick when I think about the airbag being tampered with.

The bloke I dealt with was named Alan Su, lol must be a codename all dodgy salesmen trade under.
