Can give, but don't make a big deal out of it...

When giving something that should have been there in the first place, don't make it seem like a favor to us. Instead, should apologize that it wasn't there in the first place.

How can NS men not have insurance?!  :a-noway:

When I was in BMT, I was seriously damn pissed off by the agent who came to sell to us. Tell us stories about how dangerous BMT is, how many people get injured, blah blah blah.... Then why no automatic insurance by the SAF?

When was your BMT? Quite long ago? Mine the agent came down and explained what the plan is about. But we didn't have to sign up for it. Automatically opt in. Don't want have to opt out.

Personally I feel PR should be treated as transient labour. Use them for what they are intended for. Give suitable amount of incentive to keep them engaged. That's it. there is no need for them to serve in any other form other than economic contribution.

If you want further benefits, consider downgrading to the citizen class. that comes with the responsibility to serve.

Downgrading to citizen class? We are damn cham... Citizens lowest class in the country

Mindef's Budget: NSmen to get $100 vouchers when they get married or start a family

$100 is what national servicemen will get as part of the new Celebratory Gifts scheme, announced Senior Minister of State for Defence Ong Ye Kung at the Committee of Supply Debate

On Thursday (April 7), as part of a series of Government initiatives to recognise national servicemen.Mr Ong said: "We have been finding ways to show appreciation to our national servicemen, and those who support them - the NSman Tax Relief, NS Housing, Medical and Education Awards, Safra facilities.""These forms of recognition are important to let them know their sacrifices are deeply appreciated, and for the greater good of Singapore," he added.Other than the family celebratory gift, here's what the Ministry of Defence will be spending some its budget on:NS Excellence Award enhancedThe Family Recognition Voucher scheme, which will be renamed NS Excellence Award, will be enhanced from April 1.

More NSmen will be awarded for their good performance during In-camp Trainings (ICTs) and NS courses as the number of those who will be rewarded will increase from top 10 per cent to top 30 per cent. The top 10 per cent will receive $200, while the next 20 per cent will receive $100.

Enhanced insurance coverage

Each serviceman will be covered for $150,000 in group term life and in group personal accident insurance. This will cover all incidents during full-time NS and operationally-ready NS activities, Mr Ong said.

Better SAFRA facilities

It was earlier announced that the new SAFRA Punggol club will be completed in April 2016.Mr Ong said he had visited the clubhouse and believes it will "serve the 82,000 NSmen and their families living in the North-east region of Singapore well".

New NS Mark accreditation scheme

This scheme recognises organisations supportive of NS and Total Defence, and encourages more employers and businesses to adopt human resource practices that support NSmen.Under the scheme, organisations will be awarded either the NS Mark, or the more prestigious NS Mark (Gold)[email protected]

I just MR a few years back. NSmen these days are quite lucky, with so many incentives.

When I was formation NSman of the year, I got some vouchers and was invited to Isetana for a tea party. Didn't receive $200.

When I got married 1 day before ICT, my CO gave me a handshake. Didnt receive $100.

I must say, they are now doing more for NSman because they do recognise the unhappiness of citizens vs PR.

Thumbs up.

These incentives are not enough to offset the pain and sacrifices but hey, its our country.

cheers.

PS - I miss ICT.

Personally, the mindset of the national is

if it is FREE we will keep it

hence, i dont envisage a possible reduction in our NS duration

what i am very worried about is

the world is moving so very fast

we already had been disadvantaged by NS, resulting in being 2 or 2 1/2 years behind our girls and our foreign classmates

in the future it will be worse for our children

even 6 months can mean a break or score

the economic cycle also is shorter

hence, i am just worried about our children

am i worrying too much for our kids

or should i just relax

TAIPEI Taiwan will reduce compulsory military service from one year to four months, the defense ministry said Dec. 14, in what is widely seen as a first step towards scrapping conscription altogether.

Benefiting from improved ties with mainland China, the islands young men will have to spend shorter time in uniform beginning from early 2015, after parliament passed an amendment to the conscription law late Dec. 13, it said.

In Singapore, its definitely a great place to have daughter instead of a son, since It placed great emphasis on education level. Female tend to get more opportunities than guys as they enter the workforce early and they were more stable financially. The minimum requirement of securing a good paying job is a certified degree with relevant job experience and generally that make the female have an advantage. Most important, NS contribution is not a recognise factor in the workforce. Many companies were dependant on cheap labour and rule that NS is a liability rather than commemorating the service. NS completion should be one of the employment terms in their selection criteria. Since all males in Singapore is liable to serve NS, MOM need to roll out more employment terms to support the recognition.

I enlisted in 2010. Yes. Auto opt in. Insurance agent there just to explain what it is for and what can claim and how it works. Tell us can opt out but talk directly to the CO/OC(forgot who already) cuz they want to know the reason why we opt out. Obviously, being new recruits, most of us would just prefer not to have a one-to-one talk with the CO/OC. Lol.

NS can help with finding job la. My first job required 2 years of working experience. I sent in my CV and said I had 2 years of working experience. During the first, second and third interviews, all the interviewers were interested in my working experience. So I told them it is NS and talked about what I learnt and how I am going to apply it to my work in the company. I was accepted, so I guess NS working experience is valid.

Job title was logistics supervisor. Basically I just mentioned that I learnt leadership skills during the CQ course and during NS, I learnt what it is like to be working and not studying. Although there is only an allowance, but I got to experience the responsibilities of holding a position. And just gave some examples of what I had to handle during my 2 years of NS lo.

That absolutely sucks balls la. Scare recruits into buying their insurance..... Personally, I would have asked them to schedule the CO to come talk to me...
