Singapore has a culture that we keep asking people with no relevant experience to take charge of big corporations. You think the DFS CEO is no good? not competent? She increased the profit of SMRT by renting out all the retail spaces leading to lower fares for all. Singapore likes to hire Accountant to lead Chartered semi. Likes to ask our Health minister to take charge of housing.

Investment methodology starts with assessing the management. It is not just about a CEO or top management making big money for the company. Everyone put in that position can cut cost to achieve fast nice numbers on the P&L and B/S. It is the one that has the right calling that will make the company go towards its vision and mission. When that is done right, the money will come. The same philosophy applies to your own biz, forget about the profit for a moment, instead focus on what is your mission and vision. When you deliver that, the money will roll in.

As the CEO, you have to make decisions... how do you make the right decisions if you dont have the relevant background? spend so much money on consultants... blah blah blah... why not hire the right guy at the top??? Frankly, the SMRT debacle that lasted so many years will be the final straw that convince me to vote the other way permanently... Why bother to make such comments? Have you ever seen govt promote peasants to CEO with the relevant academics and experience from within that organisation? No, unless that the individual is a scholar or a member from the elitist club they don't stand a chance. CEO role is management. The one who needs tech experience is the COO. Ppl ask the current CEO to step down but you have no idea yourself who to put up there so end up another one like him will be cherry picked to be placed there as CEO. LPPL. As if the CEO is the only one at fault. The issue is far beyond the CEO and the company. Ppl are still so myopic and put the blame on that one individual who is only a puppet. Right now smrt is like that children nursery song "Humpty Dumpty". Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king's horses and all the king's men Couldn't put Humpty together again Edited June 29, 2017 by Watwheels

Right now smrt is like that children nursery song "Humpty Dumpty". I work in the tech sector there are PLENTY of CEOs who are tech trained. I would say the majority is tech trained for companies that excel technically. SMRT has a big technical challenge to solve... if you appoint a blur tech sotong who dont know anything technically, all he can rely on is someone else like you say, the CTO or COO... At the end of the day, the decisions is made by the CEO... if he blur sotong or has conflicting opinons from his team, how do you expect him to make the right decisions? I am of the same thinking as you..the leader must inspire at the highest level...just like the chinese troops in 三國演義, they would rather follow Guan Yu into battle than follow an administrative clerk.. Only here in singapore we have people such as a surgeon leading the Ministry of Defence.....I mean if you put the paper generals in to lead Mindef as Minister I still think that is plausible but here in SG..I guess mostly things is the other way round... Sosaria Twincharged June 29, 2017 Share June 29, 2017 Root cause is the population size increase. It's too late now to roll back the tide. How to encourage people who are already here to move out or go back? A system like the smrt is hard to fix when it is required every day to be operational. There is no way to shut down the system for proper replacement or upgrading. This can only be manageable if the ridership is within a reasonable number. But what happen in recent years is that in trying to maximize the utility of the system, it has been overstressed and has no spare capacity to tolerate "downing" for the necessary fixes. What is happening now is that the only fixes possible are "band aid" type solutions that are quick to implement but does not constitute permanent, long-term fixes. It goes to show how putting the wrong people at the top, and for so long insisting to keep the person there (it's not desmond's fault, he just dropped in recently) ... can lead to irreversible consequences. I say again, irreversible already - I don't give smrt train system much hope of improving.

Before mrt undergo change angry ppl comprain and whine about the multiple delays. During change angry ppl are pissed off by the inconvinience, they comprain and whine and start to point fingers. After change has settled same group of angry ppl will continue to comprain and whine. I don't think they will grow tired. So smrt has to come up with ways to make ppl happy. That's key to stop ppl from compraining and whining. Edited June 29, 2017 by Watwheels ↡ Advertisement
