CH_CO 6th Gear December 20, 2011 Share December 20, 2011 (edited) Recently , i got charged with a stupid $20+ data roaming charge in MY when i turned my cellular data off, I have always done it when i am overseas and was never charged for it. I called the customer service and was told that is not enough? We must change the cellular data stuff and crap ??? I answered back there isn't any instructions on how to change anything other than to turn off the cellular data? It is not on the website neither anywhere and do you know what crap that fellow said? It is the consumer's responsibility to ensure that the proper setting are done!??!! How to do it when it is not told to me before? Seriously , consumer's responsibility to find out ?? How? Wah damn hot talking to him, if i need to change all sort of setting which should be done on the provider side , why do i need to pay them money for? Wow first time encounter this kind of thing , i already turn off data and still tio charge and they cannot even tell me where i served? Nor how i used it? Of course , this is not alot of money my normal roaming charges are a few times more but it is the principle behind it. Anyone else encountered this crap? Hate to talk to people which can't even understand , from how i hear his accent , sure pinoy. Kek sim ah. Is this how Singtel treat their loyal customer? If my customer service guy talk to me like that , i will talk his manager and have his head by tml. Nope , never. Had a prepaid card to do outgoing and stuff. Phone was never in use except answering calls and i was very sure all the stuff is turned off before i go. My friends can't even get through me using whatsapp and had to resort to calling me. I had bad experience before using another phone where is was charged overseas data while in Singapore so thereafter i was very careful to make sure data roaming is off. But on Iphone this is the first time i encountered such thing. Edited December 20, 2011 by CH_CO
Kurty Supercharged December 20, 2011 Share December 20, 2011 it happen to me before.. same telco, but mine was around 40+, they manage to waive it off.. not sure what model of handphone you are using, for s2, we can switch it off (data) when roaming. you gonna watch it, i was told even wifi, there might be some charges if was not done correctly. for me, i think those cs are willing to help if you are polite with them and of course, genuine case
Adrianlim13 2nd Gear December 20, 2011 Share December 20, 2011 I thought once the data roaming is disable on the phone itself, there is no way the phone can fetch data whilst on roaming . Maybe u could have accidentally uncheck it ? Hmm

If my customer service guy talk to me like that , i will talk his manager and have his head by tml. I think what might happen is that while you are near MY, probably still in sg, near customs, your phone might have locked on to a MY cell signal. Meaning to say, you are already considered roaming because you are on MY providers network. So you happily use your phone, no aware of this and hence you are being slapped with the data charges. And yes, like it or not, it is the user's responsibility to ensure that data roaming is turn off properly not telco. I mean come'on the phone is in YOUR hands. There is nothing that the telco can do to prevent you from using data roaming except you yourself. Essentially, Singtel is being billed by MY's telco for their customer's data usage. Naturally Singtel will bill you in return.
W210k 1st Gear December 21, 2011 Share December 21, 2011 For me, the solution is very simple ... especially for my children's cell phones (need a firm control on these!) when we are all on vacation overseas. Just go to Mustafa and buy those cheap 2G no-camera phones for all - including myself. That's the best control measure, IMHO. No i-Phones or Blackberry to be brought. Without 3G, no data roam issues to worry about - accidental, or otherwise! Live with only voice calls and rudimentary SMS. Minimize these even. For communication with your family (e.g. when out shopping / dispersed) use walkie talkies if necessary (I have not personally tried this, but my colleague had used this mode effectively in HK and Tokyo. Coverage can be up to 2km, or farther, depending on model). No pictures taken to upload/send and vice versa. Bring along real cameras. No GPS / map for navigation - use printed maps & compass. No surfing the Internet.
Jman888 Moderator December 21, 2011 Share December 21, 2011 (edited) for kid son vacation, i usually switch their phone to flight mode so that they can still play game and connect to wifi. if really want to play safe, for iphone, just delete all the setting under APN beside disable the roaming. If my customer service guy talk to me like that , i will talk his manager and have his head by tml. you are definitely not the only one that this issue using iphone when overseas. my friend got this problem but managed to waive off her bill last time. may be you can write in formally on this. but remember to be humble. cause frankly, it is the user responsibility to ensure this kind of thing will not happen. when you find the data roaming option, just off it. cause you do not know what is inside iphone, it is not open sources. do you have any data mobile monitoring system? you can use it to keep track when overseas to see if any data is being used. i cant recommend you on this cause i am using android that i can easily keep track to see if data is being used. i believe iphone should have this option since it is supposed to be very user friendly. Honestly, it's very dangerous for people like me whose data connection is always on. Now i always off my data connection when going the near coast. ECP is alright though. Stratovarius Turbocharged December 21, 2011 Share December 21, 2011 go Setting -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> unclick 'Use packet data' and 'Data roaming' Faster way with my S. Think S2 is the same. Just press and hold the power button, you will see data network mode. Press to off it. Only for android 2.2 or higher.
