Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence and National Development Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman reviewed the 9th Specialist Cadet Graduation Parade at Pasir Laba Camp this evening, where 1,287 Specialist Cadets (SCT) graduated as specialists of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) after completing the 22-week Specialist Cadet Course (SCC).

Speaking to the graduands at the parade, Dr Maliki highlighted the expanded responsibilities of the Specialists in the 3rd Generation SAF. He said, "As Specialists, you have to work closely with the Officers to forge a strong and cohesive unit. You have to maintain and enforce discipline in the unit. You have to manage complex systems and equipment. Most of all, you have to earn the confidence and trust of your men." Dr Maliki also emphasised the important role that the SCTs would play as leaders and commanders in the SAF and how they should make every effort to communicate and spend time with their men. "Be their guide, friend and mentor but do not take their respect and loyalty for granted. You are the critical link between the soldiers and the SAF leadership," he added.

During the 22-week SCC, SCTs underwent rigorous and realistic vocational training to develop leadership and combat skills, and also deepen their knowledge of the other vocations in the SAF. Also present at the parade were the families and friends of the graduands and senior SAF officers.

Taiwan is considering cutting their NS to just a few months (maybe 4 months).... in fact, some European countries have only max 1 year of NS.

What's the pros n cons if sgp follows suit? [:)]

How about all NS men (reservists) be given discounts on public transport?.... FTs/FWs will pay more to make up the loses bus/train companies incur as a result of NS concession.

Is the LAW still in use?

yes... we have our indigenous MATADOR. A very good copy of an AT4CS [laugh] Shredded plastic instead of vapour to reduce backblast

Well for them the threat is very real. For us its not so much the threat but rather the cost of raising a larger professional military to redress a shortening of NS. Now the Navy is already facing manpower drain... youngsters nowadays all very smart... how many will want to defend our land? [laugh] very few

Turbocharged

The LAW and Matador are different weapons.

Ya. What i mean is the one used back in the 90s. Those tube type and you flip the sight to aim and fire off.

I was LAW trained. Then suddenly one ICT, kena asked to handle Matador.

Me: "Sir, I am only LAW trained. No formal training in Matador. Shouldn't I be trained first for safety reasons?"

PC: "Aiyah never mind la. Both the same. Hold on shoulder, remove safety pin, aim and squeeze trigger."

Me: <silence>

KNS. Weight wise, I rather handle LAW. Matador like carrying a bull. [laugh]

LAW looks deceptively slim but its backblast is quite KNN.
