Should use of hand-free phones etc be banned?

Heard on the news this morning USA is considering a total ban on the use of hand-free phones etc while driving. A recent road death had record showing the dead driver sent 11 smses within 10 minustes of the car accident which killed him.

If hand-free phone calls are considered by the law maker a distraction for the drivers, i would say talking to passengers (worst case: argueing/quarrelling) is just as bad.

Do you think hand-free calls, texting, playing angry bird, etc etc should be banned, or even talking while driving must also be banned?

Some say a life is worth a million dollars, or more (if he's a minister, definitely more?).

the difference in talking to a person in the car & one over the phone...

Person in the car can react to the traffic condition and will pause the sentence if that driver hits the brakes hard...

The person over the phone will just talk.

If I see you playing angry bird while driving, I will be the angry bird! [laugh]

But I agree that a total ban, especially in Singapore could work out. Singaporeans are always in a hurry to go somewhere, so they speed and multitask (smoke, talk on phone, eat, put lipstick, play angry bird, texting, blow*** etc.), in the end they become super distracted.

I think in Singapore, phones should have an additional Driving Mode.

What you said is quite true. However, passengers in the rear seats, or who are not drivers themselves, may not be paying much attention to the traffic condition when they talk to the driver. One good example is my mil and my own mother also...

I impose my own ban: never answer any phone calls when i drive... at the most ask my wife (if she's next to me) to take the call. If the caller ID shows my boss is calling, i also ignore him coz my auto reply will tell him I am not available and will return his call soon.

All people will likely to freeze their speech under:

Accelerations...

Decelerations...

Try hard braking...

Oh, my wife screams under my acceleration.... and hardbraking also. I guess her screams are equivalent to stopping our conversations :D

Sometimes she just yells "STOP IT!!"... i am not sure if she means to stop the conversation or other things?

used before, not accurate ar...... typing still best....

should just ban texting not the whole tele thingy.

if u ban using handsfree, ppl will stop buying them and use their handphone speaker. even worst. not clear so they will use another hand to hold near to mouth

I still see people using their mobile in one hand while driving.

We can talk about ban but it is even difficult to enforce non-hands free offences. So TP starts pulling people over for singing over the radio or what?

You have a good point.

If caught txting while driving: license suspended 3 months, repeat offence: 12 months. Life is precious.

Or use some hi-tech device to auto activate hazard lights, slow down the car etc whenever the phone is used (for conversation) for more than 15 seconds (enough to tell caller he's driving)?

LOL.... the trouble is 95% of the time (when she's with me) my acceleration is about that of a 600cc van... she has no chance to get use to the once-in-a-blue-moon burst....
