National Servicemen may be deployed to safeguard rail network: Masagos

SINGAPORE - With the opening of 12 more Circle Line train stations in October, the police are reviewing National Service manpower needs to keep the country's rail network safe.

Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, said yesterday that more officers were now needed to safeguard Singapore's public transport system.

One strategy is to deploy National Servicemen to the frontline where they can be most effective, said Mr Masagos during an employers' visit to the Police Coast Guard headquarters with Minister of State for Defence and Education, Mr Lawrence Wong.

Both men had a dialogue session with some 120 employers and members of the Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence (ACCORD) on the issue of National Service.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Mr Wong said employers were supportive and understood the need for defence.

"We need the support of employers. It can be quite disruptive to their operations. Some of them did talk about the difficulties they face, especially when they are already facing a crunch with manpower issues, with a tightening of foreign labour ... We understand the difficulties."

Earlier, Mr Wong also chaired an ACCORD council meeting.

During the meeting, Mr Wong reiterated the relevance of ACCORD as a platform for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to engage the public on defence matters. ACCORD members regularly visit MINDEF and Ministry of Home Affairs units.

"ACCORD members act as ambassadors to help MINDEF reach out to the public by explaining new policies and programmes relating to defence and National Service and, at the same time, gather useful suggestions and feedback from them," Mr Wong said.

Nothing can stop a determined attacker.

It'll just add the unncessary deaths of the servicemen doing the patrolling.

Take for example, if they detected someone with a bomb in a moving train, what can be done? Before these serviceman can get near the attacker or draw their arms, he had already detonated the bomb.

Agreed, if something really going to happen, no matter who you deploy also will happen. [rolleyes] But how come they need to deploy national servicemen to guard MRT station??? [confused]

Actually.. activate SAF also good.. else NSFs either at camp relaxing or go for countless outfield exercise. Let them do real time patrol of MRT stations and train will give them more exposure in urban warfare..

this statement is fair

but does not emcompass all attacks.

if only 30% of the attackers are strong minded,

the patrol can scare off the remaining 70% of the hum-ji attackers.

I thought SMRT CEO already said security is SMRT responsibility.

Now tax money used to help SMRT a private enterprise defray security costs.

Cheaper fares soon?

Absolutely sharp analysis. Have a nice day
