Hi folks, do exhaust backfire means I'm running too rich or lean? Experience backfire pop pop pop sound when I wot, experience a few time alr if under hard driving, workshop say its normal but I somehow find it strange. Could it be the exhaust too restrictive or too little fuel. Thanks in advance for the replies

WOT pop pop sounds, maybe seldom WOT? if i WOT every often (like on track, every 400m etc), no pop pop, but if WOT only once or twice a month, sure pop pop..... normal? :o

You are unlikely to be running a carburettor fed engine (which would have implied that your AFM is lean). Rather, the inference is that your AFM (Air Fuel Mixture) is too rich as you are probably running an internal combustion engine based on the Otto Heat Engine Cycle.

My interpretation of what is happening is this. For some reason, your AFM has been tuned to run too rich. This doesn't pose a problem except at high engine revs. The duration in which the AFM is permitted to combust and thereby drive the piston becomes restrictive due to the excessive amount(s) of fuel. Hence, the exhaust phae of the Otto cycle kicks in causing substantial amounts of hydrocarbons to exit the exhaust manifold.

The exhaust backfire occurs because one of the primary purposes intended for the Catalytic Converter is to burn off any unburnt hydrocarbons and the problem is that there is simply too much of them hence the backfire along with the accompanying popping noises.

Bro I thi I u are right although I'm not too sure about it, cos when there's backfire normally during full trottle when I hear the pop pop sound, my car seems stuck like can't accelerate at all speed not including, and I have to let go and if I go full throttle again the same thin happen, but if I depress halfway and full throttle again it goes. I have the cat no more too.

Yah, is it normal? Actually the Poping sound only come when I push it extremely hard.

Like this? [:p]

Anyway, that's part of it's feature. Anti-lag they call it.
