Desmondtwb Clutched December 11, 2011 Share December 11, 2011 Previously been experiencing difficulty in starting from time to time (few weeks once). It goes like this, Physically Crank .......-no response for 2-3secs-...... then the cranking sound starts and engine is started without any coughing. Yesterday the problem got worse. It goes like this, Physically Crank .......-no response for 2-3secs-...... cranking sound starts but comes with coughing .......-no response again for 2-3secs-...... cranking sound starts again and engine started with some difficulty. Is this straight out battery needed to be replaced or something wrong with my starter motor? ↡ Advertisement

Yeobh 4th Gear December 11, 2011 Share December 11, 2011 You may have a contact problem probably at the starter solenoid switch. Check you battery terminal connections and the battery positive cable to the starter. Also check the switch wire connecting to the starter solenoid. That is a device to engage the starter motor to the flywheel, for cranking the engine, and I have yet to encounter a Bosch starter motor without a solenoid switch. Yeobh 4th Gear December 11, 2011 Share December 11, 2011 (edited) The solenoid when activated via the ignition switch will send current to the coil which will be energised and kick the motor pinion gear towards the engine flywheel. At the same time the motor will be powered up via heavy current directly from the battery. Edited December 11, 2011 by Yeobh ↡ Advertisement
