Satria_neo Clutched November 23, 2011 Share November 23, 2011 I am planning to do an engine oil roundup. I will try to build or acquire a timken OK bearing load machine to simulate bearing load. Types of test I am thinking of. 1. Room temp test (like what those commercials do) 2. Engine temp test. Hardly see this. Basically heat the oil to 100C and see how it performs compared to room temp. 3. Additive test (see if additives work or not) 4. Oil soak test (some oils/additives claim particles will adhere to metal parts) 5. "Dry" test. As in soak the bearing in oil for 24hrs, then leave it hanging to dry for 24hrs. See how much protection is left. 6. Used oil test. Eg. how good is the oil after 2000/4000KM etc. Any suggestions? ↡ Advertisement

Timken only test the extreme pressure additives of the oil, doesn't necessary provide the overall picture of the test subject performance. Engine test method Sequence IIIG would be a pretty good guide on the oil overall performance.
SimonTan 2nd Gear November 24, 2011 Share November 24, 2011 Why not test all the different use engine oil from cars? Surely can get the free used oil from car workshop easily. Bearing test? How to determine the wear and tear? Just visual observation is not scientific at all! ↡ Advertisement
