Soufigo Neutral Newbie November 20, 2011 Share November 20, 2011 Recently my sister got into an accident with an Audi A6. the result was only a minor scratch. however, the driver wanted to change the whole bumper ( he could have just repsrayed). total bill came up to 10k. trust me, when i look at the picture taken. there was no dent at all and even the scratch i cannot see until my sis pointed it out. probably about 1x5cm. My sister's car is covered by D*r*ct *sia . dont know about the other party though. my Bro in law is the insured, and my sis was the NAMED driver. she is 26yrs old with more than 2 years driving experience. at first her insurance wanted to protest the claim by the other party as they consider it excessive claim. so they send an investigator to interview my sister. then suddenly out of the blue, they contact my bro in law to inform him that they will cancel his insurance right from the start and refund the premium paid by my bro in law. Reason they gave was that had they known my sister would be driving more than her husband, they would not have covered the car. i was thinking what kind of a stupid reason was this? trying to escape having to pay for the excessive damage by other party? My bro in law paid a higher premium by putting in my sis as a named driver and this is what he got? MY question is are there any solution for them? i mean this case is freaking ridiculous. suddenly revoking the insurance and leave my bro in law and sis in a limbo. i had a case with another insurance company. there was a mistake in quoting by my agent because i specifically told her that i had no ncd but she told the company i am liable for 10% ncd. the result was just to top up the difference. in no way did the company want to cancel the insurance even though they said had they known i had an accident last yr they would not have offered to cover my vehicle. ↡ Advertisement

I believe in the first instance, they are trying to cheat both LTA and your brother. Report to LTA, and sue the Insurer.

Chucky2007 Turbocharged November 20, 2011 Share November 20, 2011 Strange that insurer would suddenly refund premium. If it's true, this type of insurer have to be avoided at all time.. How to have peace of mind insuring with them?
Amazon777 3rd Gear November 20, 2011 Share November 20, 2011 (edited) There is risk putting in a young (<30) & inexperience named driver in a insurance. In this case, the insurer assumed that your BIL is driving the car most of the time and your sis drives it casually. During the interview, your sister must has told them she used the car most of the time, should have just told them she is a casual driver. It may be unethical, but I think they are latching on this weakness, as your sis would have to pay higher insurance premium if she will to own a car herself. The claim of $10K is excessive, if the repairs come to only few $K, don't think they will siam. Cannot deny the fact that the minor accident is caused by your sis. Should have just exercised some negotiation with the Audi owner and do it elsewhere. A brand new bumper with new paint should not even cause more than $2K to $3K in other workshop. Recently, I went to respray my sis VW whole rear bumper with a slight dent that need panel beat. Total cost $130 only. Heartbreakid 6th Gear November 21, 2011 Share November 21, 2011 Insurance company these days are just nuts. Sometimes for some it's just plain useless. We pay high premium and got this kind of unethical and lousy service and coverage. I think these insurance companies just take its customers for granted. Soufigo Neutral Newbie November 21, 2011 Author Share November 21, 2011 Seems fishy why the suppose to be victims just afraid to take action. bro, not cooking up a story. but i know my bro in law and sis very well. im very sure this is not made up. now they are scrambling to get a new coverage elsewhere. 1) reason they contemplating on wether to take action or not is because afraid that the case might not go their way and they will incur more cost than they already have because obviously insurance company having been in the business for some time sure know their way around things. and the victims are not well versed. its simple. not fishy at all. i find it appalling at first too

If it's true, this type of insurer have to be avoided at all time.. How to have peace of mind insuring with them? they refund the premium because they want to cancel the insurance from the date it was in effect. not from the day they informed him of the decision. even i didnt know that it was possible. add: premium for their 2005 honda civic 1.6 vti is 2.8k. if my bro in law did not put in my sis as a named driver would be 1.7k. because he is over 30 and 10yrs experience. but he willing to pay higher for peace of mind. in the end still np peace of mind Edited November 21, 2011 by Soufigo

The Insurer's action also mislead LTA into allowing the renewal of Road Tax for non-insured vehicle.
Shull Turbocharged November 21, 2011 Share November 21, 2011 Look at the contract fine print.. I am on direct asia too.. As far as i know, there is no clause that states that named driver cannot drive most of the time..
Darryn Turbocharged November 21, 2011 Share November 21, 2011 Having gone through the DA procedure before, they do draw a distinction between named driver and main driver, and they explain why. Bros, there's a lesson here - when you take up insurance you must understand what you are buying, and then some more, if you buy something borderline - KNOW what you have bought and talk accordingly.
