Elfenstar 3rd Gear October 26, 2012 Share October 26, 2012 Bringing up an old-ish thread. Can someone who's used Nokia iDrive (or whatever the navigation system is called) respond on the quality versus what's available on Android? I am deciding whether to get the Lumia 920 or the Galaxy S3 LTE and GPS is one of the key features I need. I use a Nexus with Sygic, and Nokia Drive on a bottom end Lumia 610. Before that I used the Route 88 app that was part of HTC's nav on my Incredible S. I prefer Nokia's Navteq maps over the Tom Tom maps for the other two. If you don't mind rooting the S3 (if you get it), ownhere mod will enable Google Navigation which has better maps than Navteq's. To be honest, I don't think you'll have any issues with either phone except maybe for whatsapp on the 920. It's piss all laggy on Windows Phone at the moment. I suspect the S4 and the extra 512mb (768mb extra in my case) of ram in the 920 will make it minimally annoying though.
Elfenstar 3rd Gear October 26, 2012 Share October 26, 2012 All smartphones have GPS. Difference is if they come with navigation system. Lumia has turn by turn navigation - Nokia Drive comes stock. I doubt S3 has any turn by turn navigation system pre-installed. Google Maps is still the best Maps, the easiest, the most user-friendly map around. My wish is, Google Maps will have (i) turn by turn navigation for SG and SEA countries (ii) downloadable map instead of depending on always on data connection. All other maps have so lousy the search function. If road names is programmed as Bukit in their map and you enter "Bt", "bt", Bt.", bt.", it's going to be hell for you. Bing map is the worst. Well as mentioned, if you don't mind rooting your phone, ownhere mod will enable Google Nav, The maps are downloadable from factory though. http://google-latlong.blogspot.sg/2012/06/...or-android.html However be warned, due to some malaysian regulations, its not very complete if its offline for them. JB is fine though. Bing is much better now that they're using Navteq

I don't mind rooting - but the key feature for satnav will be offline navigation. I intend to drive up to KL a lot so will need a map for Malaysia - I always get lost there! Uses MFM maps so it should be the most accurate (gotta check on the MFM forums for which version of papago). Also downloading offline maps for malaysia on google can be an issue as some area's cant be downloaded (apparently MY govt request). To be honest, if you're going to be travelling up often, you might want to consider what I'm doing. I use my Nexus as a daily, but the Lumia 610 as a spare ($160 second hand). The latter I use with a malaysian prepaid SIM. RM$5 for unlimited internet per day or RM$18 for a week. The latter I use as a wifi hotspot and GPS. Erghh...this is what I want to avoid, carrying two phones. So S3's/Android's offline navigation not so good huh? I guess I'll wait until the Lumia 920 comes out and see what the prices are like as compared to the S3 LTE.

I'm just looking over online reviews, looks like it has a few issues with different phones (I guess a problem for most Android developers). Dammit...looks like I'm being pushed to the Nokia...I hate being an early adoptor, always disappoints me (I got the first gen Galaxy S on the first week of launch - sucks to the MAX!) Sygic for the most part works fine unless you go to strange industrial areas etc like I do where sometimes the streets are not updated fast enough. Not to mention I prefer using my android phone for all the other stuff, and it's simpler not having to start and stop my GPS. Thanks for your papago suggestion too! You'll hardly be an early adopter for Windows Phone. Nokia did a great job with the existing lumia series. As mentioned, my only issue is Whatsapp, and that I'm on a budget devices with underwhelming hardware (it is a spare/2nd phone :P) Even my mom's HTC Mozart worked great. Only thing is that she became an early adopter when she won it and the app ecosystem them was a far cry from what it is now. To be honest, I don't think you'll be disappointed with any flagship phone unless its a BB

This basically allows you to have more powerful functions. http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/ho...xy-s3-50008588/
