Air con cut off when in hot weather

may differ from car to car. some cars the compressor never cuts out (like bmw), the car just feeds warm air from engine to get the right temp. some cars it keeps cutting in and out (like volvo, maybe nissan). not sure about toyota.

we are not talking about the frequency of the compressor being online. We are talking about the ability of the compressor to vary useful output as a function of the heat loading. That is, is the compressor capable of working at a lower power output rating when say you set the a/c preset to 28 degrees c compared to 20 degrees c.

won't happen for now unless the compressor is operated by an electric motor (very likely as we're already seeing electric motor steering). maybe some conti cars already doing it, i am not sure. but AFAIK right now the compressor is either always online (until manually switched off) or cuts in and out based on thermostat.

most cars' compressor is pulled along by the engine, so the faster the engine revs the more it compresses... which is why your a/c is the coolest on a highway cruise.

my point is............

set it at 18deg or 30deg, the duration between cutting in or out for both temp are the same. Cant try it to see for yourself.

for example on a hot afternoon:

setting it at 18deg, the comp starts running for 10sec and cuts it out for 15 sec before cutting in again.

setting it at 30 deg, its the same as above...........

To sum it up, i set it at lowest at all time as setting the temp higher dont lessen the load on compressor.

Feel cold?, turn it off manually but with the blower still blowing
