Air con cut off when in hot weather

Hi all,

my 4 yo toyota vios have this strange problem.

From my observation, in cool weather, there is no problem but if under hot weather, my air con will be cut-off. There is only hot air blowing out.

Any bro can advise what is the likely problem?

Thanks in advance!

blowing out hot air its better to change the compressor

cool weather means it is taking in air from the outside...

first thing to check is relay becos its the cheapest thing to look out for

2nd is topping up of gas.

3rd is piping

lastly its a compressor leak or something

so can change to a reconditioned compressor....toyota should be cheap and cost effective

hmm... my 2005 swift has a weird whirring sound at 2k RPM and seriously less power when my air con is turned on... my usual workshop told me that the compressor should be replaced (about 1-2k+), but since it's still working, they said leave it as it is for now.

Wonder if anyone faced this problem before, and can anyone advise? Thanks.

wah... u so detailed... i wanted to say compressor nia...

anyway, another possibility is cooling coil... if the coil is leaking, then the air is not gg to be cool...

But evaporator aka cooling coil is hard to check since it is IN the dashboard.. You have to dismantle it and dip it in a water tray to look for bubbles.

So just pop the hood.. .and listen if the compressor is kicking in..

Just suggesting, but this would be my approach.

One more thing I learn, and just to share.. our car air-con is nearly as similar to our fridge- a closed system.

If you constantly need to top up refrigerant, check the pippings (Red/ Blue), then evaporator.

*You dont ever need to top up gas for your fridge, do you? [;)]

Most likely the magnetic clutch giving problems, not engaging when its hot. Don't get conned into changing the whole compressor unit.

yap... thats y dun need to take out the whole coil, just check for gas pressure... if gas pressure drop, then chances is, coil leak (or something else is leaking)... if gas pressure normal, then no problem for sure...

It's not quite as similar.

Fridge, home aircon works in a less hostile environment.

Car aircon is subjected to heat, vibration, leaks at the joints, etc.

Fridge as I understand it has coils which are welded shut, but car aircons have flexible and removable joints.

So the tendency for car aircon to fail is much much higher.

Turbocharged

Should be magnetic clutch.. i had the same problem few years back.. and it only happens when i'm stuck in start-stop traffic.. When the magnetic clutch heats up, it loses it's magnetic properties and will not engage..

that's my diagnostics too.. same thing happen to me. morning and night drive to/from work is okay. but during the day if go out for meeting, aircon died. go to one of the wkshp recommended in another thread here. help to change clutch ($240) instead of whole compressor ($680)

magnetic clutch bro. heat causes it to wear out. so usually i set my temp at 21-22 deg to stop it from cutting in and out all the time. and if the weather is cool, i switch off my a/c completely.

also if you're revving and racing your car like mad, good idea to just turn off the a/c... save the clutch from some unneeded stress.

some mfgrs make the compressor and clutch one whole unit, so lan lan have to replace the whole set unless somebody willing to repair the clutch for you. now sure about toyota, but this is the case for volvo.

its preset, be at 18deg or 30deg. The compressor works just as hard.

may differ from car to car. some cars the compressor never cuts out (like bmw), the car just feeds warm air from engine to get the right temp. some cars it keeps cutting in and out (like volvo, maybe nissan). not sure about toyota.
