Paddle Shift

So what the cost of the paddle shift?

Total set = about $1.5k includes boss kit.

You will need to use aftermarket wheel like momo, personal etc to fit.

Can be modified to use back original wheel as well but might lose the use of your factory airbag depending on car model.

It might be me, no matter how smooth the paddle shift could be, the drive from a manual really makes you enjoy your ride.

You will be more enthu to drive, to control, to understand your car. It is when you really feel you are the one driving.

The passion for a car never dies when you drives a manual.

+1.

IMO, stick shift remains the heart and soul of pure driving x-perience...one need to feel the gear and vibration thru that stick...not counting the rev matching and all that stuff that comes in your left-foot clutch control...Priceless!

In contrast, paddle shift has become rather gimmicky with all the advances in tranny design.

e.g Try shifting gear down while in a U turn on a standard street vehicle and one can fumble all over the paddle.

Hell, even in some mpv comes with paddle shift!

That said, paddle shift works best when steering ratio is low like in racing cars...which again the traditional manual stick throwing remains king.

just thinking out loud, hypothetical:

i think no such thing so far, but how about Paddle Shift Manual (that means with clutch pedal), no gear stick, the paddles do all the gear selection, sequential in: R, N, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and maybe 6 or 7 even

and the gearbox will not downshift automatically when you slow down, (as is the case I believe for most paddle-shifted cars, once speed too slow ~20km/h will down gear for you to 1st or 2nd to move off), so if you don't downshift yourself or forget to step clutch, will stall engine--in other words, a full manual, but gear engagement is automated, hence using paddles?

All syncromeshed of course,

just thinking only

yeah. i prefer this kind of paddle shift.

clutchless except u choose what gears u want and when u want.

no auto downshift or upshift.

which cars have this feature?

minus F1 cars? lol

closest are Alfa, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati.

they use sequential shifting automated manuals.

in manual mode, it's manual uplift but still got auto downshift.

This also depends on the pro-driver priority: If winning is what is all about, then go for twin-clutch with paddle.

But to the heart of driving...well we know the answer.

The good old stick shift is 100% dependent on driver's feel, touch and hearing to know when to shift and when to control the rev.

That emotional connection to car can only be conveyed through human touch via the stick and feet.

Once those computerized twin-clutch comes between the human and machine, that emotive touch will be lost.

That is why I give the Throne to the humble Stick-shift.

has anyone managed to stall an auto before?

(trying to clear mis-conceptions that autos dont stall)

Done it before

When i was still P-plate, i went down the wrong ramp at cineleisure MSCP (the one that's supposed to come out)

I realised my OMFG mistake and tried to reverse out. Halfway thru while i was adjusting by switching between D and reverse, the engine stalled

BTW this was on my previous car which was a MB CLC180. Never tried this on my Jetta and probably never want to find out...

Sure, way back when I just passed, rented a Lancer CVT from the rectangular headlights era, coming downslope, I tried to utilise engine braking from D down to 3 or 2, suddenly engine rev up and got cut to 0rpm, my speedometer and instrument panel lit up - I literally stalled while in gear (Auto gear though).

Had to shift to P to restart engine while in the middle of the road. Stupid mistake and never did it again.
