SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines has launched a budget carrier that will fly on medium and long-haul routes, including to Australia and China.

The airline, named Scoot, will begin flights from mid-2012 with a fleet of four Boeing B777-200 aircraft.

It plans to expand the network to India, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Scoot said it will offer airfares up to 40 per cent lower than full-service carriers.

It plans to recruit pilots and staff from outside Singapore Airlines.

Right.... By then SIA increase the fare in such that the current price becomes the budget's airlines' price. Still budget maa..... Same analogy, today go eat lunch at Kopi tiam, all price already factor in 10%. Eat malay rice 1 curry chicken and 2 vege is $6.10. Target price they want to earn is 5.50. If no card, bonus 60 cents... WTF.....

they are not doing a mark down on SIA price lah.

they are competiting with the likes of tiger Airway. so their price and service will be base smilar to that of tiger airway pricing.

I know what you mean.... but then, you don't know Singapore company's kuan meh..... Their definition of discount is always, "earn less than that they should".... Say budget, but they will still say SIA got premium maa.... Jetstar, say budget also, but still more ex than other budget airlines.

They will say it is cheap compared to regular SIA.

In return for the affordable airfare, you get a super cramped seat with no leg room.

Maybe there will be an option to pay more and sit further up the aisle on leather seats instead of cloth seats. However, the seat is still as cramped.

Hey .... waaaaaiiittt a minute [sweatdrop]

Qantas goes into civil war n lands up wif critically deep wounds becoz it wanna set up base here.

Juz when it tries to get up, SIA comes along and finishes off the 'roo. [laugh][laugh]

Tiger is joint-venture mah. This Scoot is whole-own by SIA. To be successful they need to be competitive in this segment.

Based on the reactions to the name "SCOOT" airlines, it's already a lot of free publicity, well...

I guess they wanted a name that's easily pronounced, even by non-English speaking people, and the domain name is also freely available.

What makes me uncomfortable to go to work there (...formerly from the industry) is that there's yet another ang moh chief executive... Haven't they learned their lesson?? Putting up an ang moh chief exec is the first step to eventual failure, as past experience has shown.

Isn't there many other suitable, home-grown candidates from SIA?
