My friend GS300 ram into the back of a xc90 driven by a ang mo lady. The Volvo just a small dent and the ang mo lady told my friend no need to compensate her as she said "your repair cost is going to be alot worse." my friend spent almost $6k for a new bonnet and hid light and some other stuffs.

Which makes me wonder if back of car is build tougher, as crumple zone only for front.

Witnessed few of these rear end accident, back of front veh not as much damage as front of hind veh, except if hind veh is truck or bigger.

The old 940 is a rubbish volvo. The ones before that were better. The real car that was built like a tank is the mercedes w124.

[wave] I think you were mistaken to think the Volvo 940 is rubbish. I also used to think like that when I see the 900 series in the then product range in the late-1990s and thought it was antiquated piece of boat-like 4 wheels in a box - especially so when compared against the 850/S70/V70 and the S40. That's the first glance and first impression and I was wrong, so were you too. The 940 is re-designed body of the 740, which it was intended to replace with updates to its fuel delivery system; the switch to non-asbestos brakes; and on the saloon/sedan, the change of the C-pillar design to address the issue of poor severe rear-end collision. Estate/ station wagon is largely unchanged cosmetically. And if you ever thought the Merc E-class W124/S124 is the best in collision and the Volvo is lousy, please check this ADAC video in the youtube link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQH6MLTSDZ4 (9 Family Cars Battle It Out)

The Volvo is just as safe as the Mercedes. The difference between them is that the Merc uses proprietary parts, which means you have to rely on Mercedes-made parts only and pay the premium for them and it is a car meant to exude that you probably have won a lottery, the Volvo uses the Getrag/ZF/Toyota (Aisin-Warner) gearboxes and, for the diesel engines sourced from Volkswagen AG and is the kind of large car that is low-profile (comfort of a big car with understated image without pricey running costs). In Europe, a lot more of this kind of rear-wheel drive Volvos runs longer than old Mercedes. Nevertheless, both are pricey to fix when they really break down. The Merc is pricey in parts, the Volvo is pricey in fuel bills (if you buy the heavier and well-appointed 6-cylinder 760/960). The Volvo is good in one aspect: you can fit aftermarket OEM parts such as Dana differentials, Getrag gearboxes or the automatic AW gearboxes found in the Toyota Mark II/Cressida/Crown, Sach self-levelling rear suspensions and many OEM items. You have to make do with Mercedes parts for the W124. Even if you could fit a suitable OEM item to try lowering the running costs, this item would fit but not work because Mercedes has not tuned it (say, electronics to make it work) or make alterations to the part. [knife]

Anyway, only the S60 and the Ford-platform based models (new S60, S40/V50/C70, V70/XC70 & S80) are lousy Volvo cars. They are junk front-wheel drive cars with wide turning circle(cannot do swift 1-sweep u-turn on a typical 4-lane road. Need to do 3-point turn), cannot do a little bit of drifting, and altered parts sourced from the Ford parts bin. [thumbsdown] Like the Merc, you can use Ford or Mazda parts. They will fit but not work, just like "interchangeable parts" between Opels and Saabs (both under GM the last time). [thumbsdown] Now, I hope you get my point. If you want a Volvo, buy an old model (anything up to the 2nd-generation V70. I'm not referring to the current-generation V70 [thumbsdown] with the electric tailgate that is sold presently).

On the off-topic, some people always say Volvo cars now belong to China's Geely and remarked about bleak future for this brand. In fact, it was quite similar when AB Volvo sold off this car division to America's Ford. Of course, there were a lot of sentiments but I think that I would rather give the Chinese a chance to prove their hands-off management of this car-maker instead. That is let it do what it does best (Unless they turned into control-freaks like corporate republic SGP/PRC). Then critics will not say we are skeptical of the Chinese, just like how Europeans once doubted Ford's ability to manage Jaguar and Aston Martin. If Americans have the chance, why not give the Chinese a chance too. What they did to it will tell when that time arrives. It might probably goes back into Swed's hands. Anyway, Geely will take the technology from Volvo to its cars like how Ford took the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) from the Volvo 850 to its 2000-2008 Ford Mondeo. Geely models might also share parts as well one day. I think that Chinese control-freak skeptics should know what models not to buy now to avoid relying on such parts in the future.

It appears to me many blokes on this forum are less informed or knowledgeable about cars, especially European cars! [:(]

Interesting comparison.

But let's say same built but one is heavier, which is more likely to suffer damages ? [:p]

But it is like comparing an old boxer and a new eagle in the WWE ring. It will be much more appropriate to compare a Volvo S80 with this Renault (to prove whether size and weight triumphs or not). The 940 actually fares on equally with the Merc E-class 124-series. Why not just say take a W124 and this Renault? I don't even think a W124 could fare better, let alone a W126 560SE. Both will end up like the 940 in the video.
