Technician crushed to death by falling bus at Sungei Kadut

Accident happened at 4.40pm yesterday at a workshop at Sungei Kadut St 5.

 

The 10-ton, 40-seater private bus was lifted up by a support structure and the techician was doing repair works underneath the bus. All of a sudden, the bus fell to the ground, crashing the 53 year old technician to death instantly.

 

修车厂恐怖意外!53岁技师伏在车底修车,惨遭10公吨的旅游巴士压扁,血肉模糊当场惨死。

 

这起意外发生在昨午4时40分,地点是双溪加株5街的一间修车厂。

 

死者是53岁的周厉荣,在修车厂担任修车技师。

 

据死者的亲人说,死者事发时伏在一辆大型旅游巴士底下,进行维修工作。这辆被支架撑起的巴士,不知何故突然失衡砸下,压扁在底下维修的死者。

 

这辆巴士能载达40多人,估计10公吨重,把死者压扁,现场留下一大滩血,令人触目惊心。

They should make it mandatory for service pits to be utilised for heavy vehicles rather than jacking them up.

 

If that's the case, even normal car workshop also need to use service pits.. cos even a 1.5ton car can kill..

A floor jack is not a 100% save lifting equipment. One should place axle stands in all the correct locations before going under. Better still place wood block directly under the wheels.

In the good old days, there are cases of mech failing into the service pits. It's not a cool idea to work in service pits and you need to watch yr heads and arms.

i observe that some of the more established workshops use hydraulic lifts instead. It also depends on what you are doing. If changing of tyres etc, then i think mechanical or hydraulic jacks are still ok.
