WATER BASED PAINT for my car uurghh!

Recently, i was conned into doing up my wifes car in water based paint rather than the time proven regular German or european paint job.

I took my car down to a so called reputable shop in the area of Thomson to get my Bodykit and a so called professional paint job done. This is was the start of my problems...

The Body kit given to my 1 year old continental car was actually an FRP --that means fibre glass content, the price was ridiculously high, although , i was stupid enough to believe the nice talking SE...without even any credentials ,to entrust my car with them....as they carry a lot of high end brands.

The fittings of the work was bad and the paint work shoddy!!! I should have sent my car to those recommended in the internet here!!! I resend my car back to do up at least 7 times ....and the so called manager of the so - called

high -tech reputable company can only say that it was state of the art, thus require more time!

More time!!! Hows this for more time?? A panel or 2 to be redone requires another 5 days of down time!!

Whats more, the finishing under scrutiny with my untrained eye showed UNEVENESS in the colour and last of all SWIRL marks which was still there..... [rifle][rifle] WTF!!!!

The entire car was done in a "record" time of almost one month!! Not that it wasn't my fault in the first place....should have gone back to the one in Eunos to redo, now on hindsight against my better judgement!!

Thats it for me ---water based crap paint... I wont even recommend them to my friends!!

Now my paint job is still BLURRY ! and the shine is Crap!!! After checking up the info by the net ,,,water based paints are only used cause there will be less lead or toxins released to the atmosphere ,,so the Earth will be greener.

SO WHAT!!! My car still is crappy and i should have stuck to the regular European time proven ones!! Sheeezzesh!!!!

Any one here has the same BAD experience or is it only me??

Water base paint requires additional care to spray paint in our humid environment. Car body are now painted with water based paint and they look good, so it's the skill and facility of the paint shop that determine the quality, not the paint.

Water base paint requires low humidity to apply, if not swirl mark, fuzzy patches will appear, delimitation is another issue if painted surface is not properly prepared before paint application.

You weren't conned by use of the paint - just sounds like the spray shop wasnt very good.

water based paints are becoming the standard for environmental reasons

most/all? new cars are painted with water based paint Toyota have been using water based paints since the late 90s.

There is no real difference with modern water based paint. In fact i prefer it. Much easier to use.

Suggest you take it back and get it redone. Failing that you can buy some cutting compound(s) from autobachs and polish back a little the top clear coat to get a smoother glossy finish. Takes time but at least you can keep the car in meantime. Buy a number or grades of cutting compoud finishing with a 9000 or so.

With the polishing paste you can get the shine you want. But it takes some effort. If you start getting color on the polish rag then you have polished through the clear coat , its better not to go that far.

They do. Not saying that because its water based so there are swirls. I am saying its alot easier to inflict swirls on water based paint. Have you ever tried polishing cars with water based paints? They are alot easier to polish cuz the paint is softer. So if washing technique is bad, easier to inflict swirls too since the paint is softer. Try polishing a merc produced before 2000 and one after 2000. The paint on those merc after 2000 is alot thinner and softer also. Thickness around 100 microns. Before 2000 was around 250 microns.
