I have the same sentiment. Putting someone on national tv  to struggle speaking Mandarin is really a lose-lose situation. It causes embarrassment to the speaker and hurt the audiences' ears and at the same time killing Mandarin.😪

When I watch it, I feel so hurt.

You talking of our president election?

In SGP, it is president selection, not election.

Recently came across this video, can't help but wonder why both of the speakers can't even communicate in Mandarin properly (even though they have lead time to prepare) are allowed on national TV.

I just watched a little bit and thought the guy from NTU at upper right corner of screen wasn't too abysmal. It's pretty basic low level mandarin sounds like direct translation but give him credit he's doing it right off the top of his head. Thinking the sentences in English and then translate, say it out in mandarin. So much CPU power involved that his face has contortions and eyes cannot look straight [laugh]

Then again we also hear in the English news, some people that can't speak grammatically correct English, so why the double standards expecting a high level of spoken mandarin in Chinese news?

There are bound to be people that are less eloquent with their languages but to be able to appear on national TV is another thing.

I really hope there is at least a basic level of screening before inviting guests to speak on national TV. Besides, all invited guests will have time to prepare beforehand so it's really irresponsible to screw up on the day itself (like your observation above).

Alamak, watch the AWWA spokesman at the start of 5:12, his mother tongue really CMI.

Like Ang Mo speaking Mandarin :XD:; plenty of time to prepare before live broadcast.

Is the AWWA spokesman a Chinese? Mayabe he is not? Lol.

Anyway, many Chinese esp the young generation are ang mo speaking mandarin!? I think even ang mo can speaks even better and fluent mandarin than Chinese.

Not everyone is able to speak fluently in a 2nd language especially it involves technically and not daily general communication. There are specific terms that you need to translate although some you could do it in advance. Best is there is no Q&A 😆.

So, if a second language is necessary, getting a translator maybe the way to go.

Sounds like a primarily english speaking local person, he is trying his best to speak mandarin,  not bad already.

Your benchmark pretty high! That speaker Mandarin articulate and good enunciation imo. 👍 Way much better than me at least.

Remember Singapore has always been proud of our 'Bilingual' education?

I can forgive if it was an impromptu situation but this AWWA spokesman had plenty of time to prepare for the live broadcast.

I expect a much better job if there's time to prepare, tells you a lot about work ethics of that person.
