Volvo going all four-cylinder or less

If it's an engine with more than four cylinders, Volvo doesn't want it in its lineup. Within the next 10 years, the Swedish automaker plans to eliminate any engine options greater than four cylinders in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions. No more five- and six-cylinder mills. In their place, Volvo will employ three- and four-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel form.

The new engine family is called Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA), and the automaker says the new powertrains will be nearly 200 pounds lighter than its current engines. In addition, the new mills will improve fuel economy by 35 percent. That will be an impressive boost, and Volvo believes it can accomplish this feat without a reduction in performance.

The 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines will start to make their way into production models by 2013. By 2020, the entire lineup will be filled with them.

new BMW F30 3 series will be 3 cylinder 1.5L turbo too. The new direction towards eco friendliness to meet EuroV emission (by 2013) and Euro VI by 2017 force manufacturers to downsize the engine to control emission.

Just 8 years ago F1 cars are 3.0 V10 ... today it is 2.4L V8. I understand (tho still under deliberation) by 2013, they will downsize to 2.0 V6 turbo or 1.6 I4 turbo. While the engine size is being reduced, the speed of the cars remain the same. So performance was not compromised at all. but emission and consumption is reduced a lot.

They should also seriously consider reducing weight of cars. Modern cars just get heavier and heavier with lotsa electric motors and gadgets.

not juz gadgets but the way it's constructed too for crash test safety. last time, 1.3L manual oredi feels quite nippy but i wouldn't wanna be in them during a crash.

I thought they were complaining about being forced into 1.5L FI.
