I've read before how in the USA, there could be 2 or 3 hour one-way commutes to work, because people stay in the suburbs to save costs or enjoy the space, but drive to work in the city. Not so much traffic jam until nearing city, but the commute is still something terrible to bear. If a city is planned well, with ample employment spread out near areas where living is preferable, then there'll be shorter commutes and more satisfaction level. Just like in singapore, shipping, petrochem and "traditional" engineering industries are all clustered in the west - bo pian if you studied this area but stay in sengkang/punggol.
