What is the point in teaching our pupils how to solve problems that they are unlikely to face when they grow up? Also, looking at some of the problems that my Primary 6 grandson has to tackle, it would seem that the examiners had set out to test whether the pupils know how to apply a certain approach (other than using equations) to problem-solving. That is fine, but if such methods are only to be substituted by equations in higher mathematics, then why teach them in the first place? Is there some innate quality of the rationale mind that needs to be awakened by such approaches? Can our pupils do without such skills? Will their lives as adults be compromised if they can't solves problems by such means? Perhaps the Ministry of Education could enlighten parents on the rationale for imposing such problem-solving approaches on our pupils. They need to be convinced that such methods have been thoroughly researched and that their long-term usefulness has been unequivocally established. Difficult questions in streaming intellect cause unnecessary stress on young minds and stifle learning. By the way, I solved the maths problem described in the letter within five minutes, and so did my Primary 5 child. I believe the Ministry of Education (MOE) included tough questions that can be solved using the diagrammatic method of reasoning, which previous generations did not learn. MOE uses a mix of easier and tougher questions for the purpose of sifting the mathematically inclined pupils. But that should not be the basis of streaming. MOE should review its justification for streaming children via tough examinations. If we are going to make our children study and not learn, is it any wonder that we lose out to creative cultures?
