tried to read the question and I almost fall asleep lol.

anyway since I had nothing better to do I decided to attempt this question, tbh I did complete it within 5 mins but spent a min or so sending smses and I admit I used it with calculator.

9876 / 3 = 3292

hall 3 initial chairs = 3292 / 2 = 1646

1646 (1/3) chairs were transferred from hall 2 to hall 3.

1646 x 3 = 4938 (number of chairs in hall 2 after hall 1 transferred chairs to hall 2)

number of chairs transferred from hall 1 to hall 2 = 3292 / 4 = 823

so number of chairs in hall 2 initially = 4938 - 823 = 4115

I hope I am right here, too long didn't attempt any maths question. but I guess for a primary 6 student shouldn't be that hard right? since from what I know, children nowadays are studying things that are harder than the past.

Is it just me?? But i think that not enough info provided to solve this question..

3 halls = 9876 , but does not state that it was divided equally.

I think you need to read the question more carefully. All info required to solve the problem can be found in the question.

Reverse calculate and it's simple.

In the end it was equal.

This father is going to be mocked at. This question is easy!

#of chairs in second hall = 9876/3 + (9876/3/2) - (9876/3/4) = 4115

You are a genius!

Anyway here's my solution:

Each hall = 9876/ 3 = 3292

Hall 3 has at first = 3292/2 = 1646

Hall 1 has at first = 5 units

Hall 1 left = 5 - 1 units

= 4 units = 3292

1 unit = 3292 /4 = 823

Hence, Hall 2 has at first = (1646 X 3) - 823 = 4115 (ans)

your though process is better than mine i must say.

[thumbsup]

i broke it down into more steps

hahaha.....i rem when i was young, i had a teacher who used to punish those who blatantly read the question wrongly by smacking them with ruler. Tough love, but it works [sweatdrop]

for a 12yr old i think this is NOT easy

even an adult need to write it down to get ans

anyway my 'model' ans:

let x=3rd hall, y=2nd hall, z=1st hall

from last sentence

2x=9876/3 ==> x=1646

from mid sentence

(1/3)y+x=2x ==> y=4938

from 1st sentence

4/5(z)=3292 ==> z=4115

to get initial y

y-(1/5)z=4115

Problem is at P6 level they are not yet taught using simultaneous equations to solve problems so your method cannot be used.
