Tom_kkh 1st Gear August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 (edited) a friend ran a recruitment ad for sales since 2 months ago. according to her, based on almost 50 plus applications, only 5 are Singaporeans, rest all phinoys and mix of indian FT.... told her maybe yr end all wait for bonus. she say singaporean asking sky high pay with no relevant experience and some phinoys and the indians FT, with experience, offer to take 20%-30% less than what the company is willing to give.. the company is offering 2.2-2.4k per month. no wonder we are overrun. they are willing to accept less for more.......... Kiadaw 6th Gear August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 2.2-2.4k isn't it a bit low for even fresh grad? If they get this kinda money, how you suppose they can afford an apartment of their own in due time, with prices keep getting higher & higher? Of course the FT are willing to have the job for lower pay. Firstly its more than twice what they get in their country, & secondly, they know they can demand higher salary once they gain more experience in Singapore by jumping ship, & most importantly, its their ticket out of their country to a 1st world country, & Singapore is a good stepping stone (due to liberal FT policy). Lastly, if they plan properly, they know they can get a big windfall (after selling the properties) when they return home or moved on many years after that. Thats the suppression of pay we have in Singapore. If you are at the low end of the scale, its sucky.
Kb27 Supersonic August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 So you see the high cost of living force the locals to ask for certain pay. FT comes in and can take low pay, bcoz back in their country the cost of living is low. So in the end, locals are the ones who will be out of jobs, unless they are willing to get lower pay each time. If companies are allowed to hire FTs freely, they will choose to pay less wherever possible. Who created this situation in the first place? You can also thank GCT for his Swiss standard of living dream.

Yewheng Twincharged August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 well, the point "asking sky high pay" with no relevant experience.... also encourage FT to be employed, i guess.... Ya.. I feel many Singaporeans need to be realistic.. and take lower pay 1st if no relevant experience. If the person is really that good than prove it to the company.. and by than can ask for pay rise also possible.. Instead of keep have this mindset of I got degree must get more than 2.4k.. etc.. end up.. company willing to take will be much more lower.. and if the person is lucky than ok.. but most of the case is.. well.. over estimate themselves with just paper qualification and no relevant experience.. Lanevomax 1st Gear August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 can we ask the LEE family to go for interview and ask for 2.2k per month salary....then they will realise what is inflation and how competitive is outside in the real singapore. go for carrer fair in what exhibition, 80% are outsiders. kaoz....really irritiating. these outsiders are really affecting our life and the market in singapore. hope will not end up in they come in , we go out situation. Bystander50 5th Gear August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 more than double i guess, but still they need to factor in the living standards here... heard a few indian "FT" was on tourist pass to look for jobs. some are on s pass or something... If 6-8 indians can squeeze into a rental flat, they saved a lot on rental and they come here solo, without the need to raise a family here. Ask those with kids living here to earn those type of pay, see how many will accept.
Expertz 1st Gear August 30, 2011 Share August 30, 2011 i think where we differ at is what is a sky high pay? is asking $100 more constitute a sky high pay? or are fresh grads asking for 5k per month? if the fresh grads are asking for $100 more, i think it makes more sense to pay that $100 and get a fresh grad than to save on that $300 or $400 and employ a FT who represents a higher risk! Tell me, which Singaporean PhD holder will be an engineer? See how long this FT will stay on with the company. If ICA have not changed their rules, this FT's first priority is to secure a job irregardless. Then ask the company to sponsor his PR application. It's very easy to tell their motive, if the company decided to apply EP instead of PR, you see if he resigns a not.

My company recently trying to recruit engineers, and happened to interviewed an indian FT whose background from pumps application engineering. All the talks on pumps design theory, selection and troubleshooting sounds quite impressive until we ask him to demostrate how he would measure a pipe diameter using a micrometer. I believe even our local secondary students know how to use a micrometer, but surprisely this FT claim he know but obviously cannot do it. Talk is one thing, and doing it is another.
