It's good that the PE is over. I didn't quite expect the mood of the GE being carried over to PE. Time to start the difference aside and move on.

My only response to this thread is this:

yes..i too will not hail this man

the other two should not have stood for the election.

the purpose of having so many candidates is to divide the opposition votes... and it succeeded [furious]

So they still hold on to all the keys to our reserves.... For the next 5 years.... Bloodily hell...

Analysts on 938 were mentioning in a straight fight between TCB and TT, very likely TCB would take the role of President by a wide margin considering TJS's 25% from anti-establishment voters.

+1

as usual the opposition shoot themselves in the foot.

Like it or not, most of us have sworn allegeiance to him.

"We, members of the Singapore Armed Forces, do

solemnly and sincerely pledge that we will always bear true faith and

allegiance to the President and the Republic of Singapore. We will

always support and defend the Constitution. We will preserve and

protect the honour and independence of our country with our lives."

I am ok with either one wins....but even if TJS or TKL has won, I'll KPKB for a while and accept the majority's choice after that.

Some says PAP was betting that by allowing > 3 candidates in PE, the chance is that the swing against it can be diluted, not unlike the mistakes made in GE by oppositions where there were 3 corner fights over GRC. Their strategy works.

TT may have "won", but with only < 1% margin, I certainly won't call this a majority mandate by the People.

Still, TT will have to prove that he is up to the benchmark set by Ong Teng Cheong, whose legacy will haunt every elected President that came after him.

Congrats to TT. He's just got the best job in the world after the Queen of England.

Seriously, my prediction came true though the actual percentages were a lot closer. here's my quick roundup of the 4 guys.

TT- we all know what to expect.

TCB- will be a good consolation prize if he won. but face it, if OTC can't change anything, neither can he.

TKL- def poorer now due to deposit loss but he may be happier for only reasons he will know.

TJS-

pros- This election provided a great marketing platform for him. His objective wasn't to win the hearts of the opposition voters but the MIW voters, who btw, are virtually impossible to convince no matter what facts you throw at them (can't blame them as they were brought up in a certain way). If he wanted exposure, he certainly got it.

cons- he messed up. He's just lost 15% of opposition votes (40% GE opp votes earlier) and probably gained none from the MIW voters. His failure to remain calm in interviews, poor grasp of spoken English, idealistic thoughts of the president's role probably cost him. If this was F1 qualifying, he's def last on the grid for the GE race in 2016.

I applaud TJS, Nicole, NSP for their heart and compassion in serving the ppl. But if all they have is heart, they are better off as social workers. In politics, the game is played differently. With a media and indoctrinated population on one side, there's virtually no chance of winning if you sound enthusiastic but empty.

btw, i heard TJS wasn't eligible for this election as he didn't meet certain criteria. If true, only God knows why the elections department allowed him to.

Lastly, for GE 2016, with the elections department being continued to be under the PM's office (unlike UEFA isn't under Barcelona, FA of England isn't under Man U, FIFA isn't under Spain), plus further redrawing of boundaries w/o opposition input (unlike again, Man U don't set the rules of EPL), we are destined to see the usual results.

Congrats TT again, and most importantly the people of Singapore who are the greatest believers in the world.

Tony Tan will be a good president. He is dignified and respectable.

You do not want a president who opposes for the sake of being popular

You do not want a president who will block important bills , like how politics messed up the USA when it came time to raise the debt limit, leading to a stock market crisis

I am anti PAP, I think that they are full of themselves, I voted against them in this year election. But I voted for Tony Tan still. You don't want to screw around with something so important.

MP no need to be clever, just need to be compassionate and work for the people, because it is a grassroots level thing (although some mp think they are LKY). but the PM , finance minister and the president, u better get the best and cleverest people, even if u don't like them)

In the first place the elected presidency is a stupid idea in our parliament system. It was a vain attempt by someone who wanted to protect his ideas and doctrine in case he lost a general election

What he never expected was what happened if you won the general election but lost the presidential election to a rabid opposition candidate. In this situation , one single man could bring the government to a stand still.

We should get rid of this idiotic idea and go back to a ceremonial presidency, let them shake hands and make prata.

Another unintended side effect of this stupid idea is that it affects our racial policies. This year was meant to be a Malay president - abdullah tarmugi. But after the GE mood, they knew they could not put a Malay candidate up. And from now on, can they get a Indian/Malay president easily?

I liked the rotation of races for the presidency, racial harmony is important. We don't want to be like Malaysia . Idiots shot themselves in the foot here again.

I think TT will have to prove to his paymasters. Contrary to what you think, i think TT will have to be everything OTC isn't, or to not be everything OTC is.

The legacy of OTC haunts MIW. That's why.

The moment we had 4 candidates, the election wasn't about who would win, but who should not win. But yet, opp voters did not exercise political wisdom and play the game intelligently. Sometimes, to win, you have to lose first.

Looks like most of voters are moderates & there is not much between TCB & TT.... Like every candidates, each has their flaws. From the result and from the campaign, TCB & TT were the most consistent and know role of an EP the best (TCB did a slight shift earlier to stay witin the constitution). I am ok with either one wins....but even if TJS or TKL has won, I'll KPKB for a while and accept the majority's choice after that.

agree!

You pointed out logical reasons for TT. But the fact is he was also in charge of GIC and some government corporations and the results have been obvious.

No, the EP has absolutely no power to block important bills. At best, he'll be able to influence the ppl of Singapore with what he says.

Many ppl tend to start criticising USA or a western democracy once something goes wrong. But i don't need to remind you for all the political systems over the past 100 years, their model is the most widely used in the world today. The stock market crisis may be present, but let's not forget America's spending may enrich the world, but make themselves poorer, which in the long term, would cost them. Anyway, with so many intelligent minds and alternative views at work, compared to less than 10% putting across alternative views in our parliament, i put my money on USA surviving in a crisis than MIW style democracy.

And lastly, the EP's role is not that important, with no means of policy making, but yea, it should be ceremonial and not waste everybody's time in voting someone who doesn't run the country.

I agree he won't change anything. His role as an MP was to be a backbencher, ie to act as a pseudo-opposition. He will say things, but at the critical moment, he will fall in line, just as a good soldier would. If he is serious about change, he should have ran in the GE as an independent candidate in an SMC, not for this ceremonial post.

Also, he is the engineered candidate: He is one whom both MIW and anti-establishment types can accept, including those who didnt vote for him. Not so much with TT. He will always be the minority President.

He will be very hard pressed to make himself popular... so his presidency may have surprises. If you are the cynical anti-establishment type, this may be the best possible outcome.

Also, moving the PMO out of the Istana may be LHL's idea all along.

Tt most Hated pres in SG... Thnx to all them tjs n Tkl voters for letting tt win

tjs had no chance from the beginning & it was v obvious he was just there to create a name for himself so that he can get more followers for future use. He knew he cldnt win & used the PE as a broadcast tool for himself. In fact even as late as 1am+ he refused to concede defeat, just shows how thick skinned he is & how he wants to psycho his followers to continue to support no matter wat. His style is good for GE but not for PE.

If Aljunied GRC had 3 corner fight for GE2011, for sure p@p will win becoz of votes dilution. I feel sorry for TCB who won so many votes yet lost by few thousand only.
