Latest on the news is that Tony Tan has won the PE and is officially now President Tony Tan.

He has won Dr Tan Cheng Bok by a razor thin margin of several thousand votes out of 2.27 million voters.

According to earlier unconfirmed reports, Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock each had around 35 percent of the vote.

Tony Tan gets 35.19 % of valid votes; Tan Cheng Bock gets 34.85%, Tony Tan wins by 7,269 votes (0.34%).

OFFICIAL RESULT: Tony Tan 744,397, Tan Cheng Bock 737,128. TJS 529,732. TKL 103,931.

The President of Singapore wields powers that allows him direct influence in government entities such as GIC sovereign funds and Temasek Holdings.

Despite the win, the thin margin of the ruling party's unofficially endorsed candidate marks the change of the political climate in Singapore where the electorate saw their popular vote fall to a record low of 60% during the May parliamentary elections.

Just wasted a whole night's sleep to see TT take 4m a year and 24m in his term.

Personal view: TKL is a mole....

Either TKL or TJS should not have stood.

Forgone conclusion. I won't hail him though. Not a must to hail him right? :D

Bookies must be laughing to the bank.

We don't need to hail him.....Just need to swear allegiance to him... [sly]

Analysts on 938 were mentioning in a straight fight between TCB and TT, very likely TCB would take the role of President by a wide margin considering TJS's 25% from anti-establishment voters.

but actually, those 25%, if given a choice between TT and TCB, who do u think they will vote?

i doubt TCB but more of TT. its not easy either.

Actually those voting TJS most likely will swing to TCB as TT represents an pro-establishment candidate with previous links.

I believe that the 25% mainly consists of the younger voters, highly anti-establishment older individuals and self made noveau riche.

Anyway, like porker mentioned, it's a foregone conclusion when it became a 4-way fight. Think this time many people correctly predicted the results to a certain degree.

Gg to bed. Bloody waste of my time hoping for a miracle..

Just got off Facebook.

Really a lot of people are very tulan. 64% did not vote Tony Tan, i just realised that.

What will this translate to?

This just means that come 2016, PAP grip on more GRCs will slip.

Looks like most of voters are moderates & there is not much between TCB & TT.... Like every candidates, each has their flaws. From the result and from the campaign, TCB & TT were the most consistent and know role of an EP the best (TCB did a slight shift earlier to stay witin the constitution). I am ok with either one wins....but even if TJS or TKL has won, I'll KPKB for a while and accept the majority's choice after that.

It also shows that when old man dies and there comes a split in the PAP, LHL's gang might lose power. He may then mobilise the military and declare martial law.

Actually there are two PAPs. Actually there are total three or four, but two are the more powerful gangs. They don't see eye to eye.

I don't think it is fair to see the PE in the same light as GE. But You may be right to say that opposition will gain more popularity in the next GE even if PAP do a very good this term. Cos, like most developed countries, more people want to see a more balanced parliaments and views will be more divided among the population and each group will want their voice to be heard. I think there will be 2 stronger parties....and the rest will be much smaller ones.

Or an even more probable scenario: in between now and next GE, if old man dies, PAP may split and the breakaway faction may form a coalition with the WP as they are the most moderate opposition.

We may very well see another first in Singapore history - that of a former Singapore Minister running o an opposition ticket.

We live in interesting times...

Finally over liao.....hands up who is going to miss the out-going President of Singapore?

And will incoming 7th President be as "nice" & "quiet as he had been since 1999?

A unifying figure? Let the Show begin!
