Quick guide to Vienna hotel

ok, need quick guide here... im travelling to Vienna/Austria next week (Business trip) and thinking of extending 1 more day for sight seeing.. any good and value for money hotel to recommend? since i only have 1 day, thinking of hotel within walking distant to those "must visit" kind of places... first time to Vienna...excited... [laugh]

Being to Vienna 4 times but long ago. First time, I stayed in a army barrack for 8 weeks! [:(] Last visit was in 2006 and stayed in Graben Hotel, smack right in the heart of Vienna where the tourist shopping belt is and about 200 metres from the famous St Stephen Cathedral. Stayed in some hotels at other visits which I can't remember. Graben Hotel cost me $172 a night then and it was a small room but was within walking distance from many tourist spots. Don't forget to take their MRT to visit the Sch

I stayed at Novotel Wien City 3 years ago. About Euro 100 a night. About 100m walk to the underground metro station. Its 2 or 3 metro stops from St Stephen's Cathedral.

 

Be sure to walk around the city centre in the evening. Its a nice city to walk around, esp at this time of the year where its going autumn (evenings can be around 8-10 degrees), so a jacket will be required.

 

go surf www.tripadvisor.com and search for Vienna. Look at the ranking of hotels and travellers' comments. I always choose my hotels based on this and have never went wrong.

add one more extension day and take the opportunity to make a day trip to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia.

Its only a 45mins train ride away (cost about Eur 20 for return trip if i remember correctly). A pretty small city. Vienna and Bratislava are the 2 geographically closest capital cities in the world.

yah, have been checking tripadvisor nearly whole day, in the end, book the Kaiserin Elisabert hotel... shortlisted a few which lies right in the center of vienna, with walking distance to a few recommended must visit place... come to think of it, i dont think i can cover much with such short stay..... maybe just relax, walk around and enjoy ... [:p]

haha! I had the same thought, a bird even shitted on me!

 

Christmas time is nice in Vienna, the Vienna Boys Choir has free performances in the church, you just have to pretend you're Catholic!

 

They have the famous Spanish Horses there too, although I didn't manage to go in.

 

The Schonbrunn palace is a must, quite beautiful and very well preserved.

 

However, in Austria, Salzburg by far was my favourite city. Beyond words really.

Visit the city by foot or tram, 1 euro I think, theres a small chinatown. Day are short there I took alot of pictures cos my time there was short too so that I can review my trip back home.

 

Booked a merc taxi to the airport and they gave me a huge vito for the same price. [laugh]

But people are nice. Europe to me is you see one, you see all, I only like moscow.

And lots of horse s--t around in city centre too...due to the horse drawn carriages.

Only managed to dig out one thread on vienna.

 

OC will be spending about 2 weeks there. (For the EPR conference and another for duno simi nuclear thingy.)

 

Was thinking of asking our PSLE gal to tag along for the trip. Since she has practically nothing to do at home nor at school.

 

Day time while OC attend to work, she will stay in hotel with laptop, tablet, penty food and drinks. (thats what she is doing at home also lar...lol)

 

Nite time then follow OC out.

 

Any kind bros got any attraction recommendations in Vienna at nite...pls feel free to contribute.

 

They might extend a few days, so day activities are also welcome.

 

Just within the city will do....cos 2 women not so convenient to travel further.

Thanks bro for the heads up.

 

Just some concerns on safety.

 

Are the ppl there generally friendly(racists?) and how is the street safety over there ?

 

Just heard austria accepted 12k refugees.....so I might think there are considerable social problems.

Safety wise, as safe as Singapore. Beggars and the homeless are almost nowhere to be seen, though occasionally you might spot them if you look hard enough. People there generally speak German with the younger people/service staff having a better command, but nothing a point-n-show can't help.

 

Note the transport there work on a honor system (you don't have to tap in or out, the people you reside there typically buy passes which are affixed with their photographs as a form of travel ID) - meaning, you can choose to buy or not to buy your tickets, but if you are checked, prepare to get fined if you haven't.

 

Refugees wise, I would be more worried if I were travelling to Germany, since their leader has welcomed them with much wider arms compared to the rest of the EU.
