Do we set it as outside air mode (indicator OFF) or recirculated air mode (indicator ON) ?

Keep it in recirculation mode to increase the fuel efficieny. Change it to fresh air mode when you require some fresh air.

when set to outside air, will the petrol smell from outside the car gets into the cabin ?

Definitely "yes". Not only petrol smell, but also whet ever comes on the way to air filter / suction, you would get inside!

For me, i set it to 'OFF' with aircon on.

And set it to "ON" without aircon.

In this way, you don't smell of petrol (from other vehicles) with aircon on ?

Wah lao, this type of thing also need to ask..

If you want colder aircon, closed the ventilation.

If you want to smell exhaust, keep it open.

But for long distance drive, is good to open the ventilation occasionally to replace with fresh air.

Not always will get petrol smell coming in, the air filter is there for a reason.

And i always prefer to have fresh air.

Somewhere could be leaking. Else, it could be the seal to gas tank is leaking thus petrol smell. The petrol tank is below the rear seat.
