The_Bear Turbocharged August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 The P-39 is also a nice looking plane. The USAAF / RAF had no luck with it but it did well with the Soviets The bui bui Brewster Buffalo also sucked when used by the USAAF / RAF but had a suprisingly good record with Finland This one was knocked out of the sky all over the Pacific. Used to play this strategic simulation board game, Midway, with my friends. These buggers are nothing more than cannon fodders. ↡ Advertisement
Ahtong 1st Gear August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 Spec wise, the F4U Corsair was superior to the F6F Hellcat. However, the F4U had safety issues and did not deploy on US carriers until very late in WW2. Therefore, it was the Hellcat that racked up an epic 19:1 kill ratio

These buggers are nothing more than cannon fodders. Yeah, it really sucked in the pacific. But it did well with the Russian air force. IIRC, one of the top Soviet aces flew a P-39. Even more suprisingly, the Spitfire was not rated highly by the Russians. I guess the legendary prowess of certain aircraft depends on how / when it was used
Ahtong 1st Gear August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 Some underrated aircraft: Hawker Hurricane - True victor during the Battle of Britain. Formed the bulk of RAF Fighter Command and shot down the bulk of Luftwaffe aircraft. Largely overshadowed by the sexier Spitfire. P-40 and F4F - Both very lousy in terms of specs but when used properly, they managed to hold their own and even turn the tables against the superior A6M Zero. P-47 Thunderbolt - For most of the USAAF daylight bomber offensive, this was the plane that thrashed it out with the Luftwaffe. It is overshadowed by the sexier P-51 that only showed up during the last 18 months of WW2. Other than bomber escort, the P-47 was also a very capable fighter bomber. The top USAAF aces in Europe flew P-47s.
Happily1986 5th Gear August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 (edited) This plane my friends, is severely underrated. Hardly mentioned by aficionadoes and shunned even by the Nazis whom i think were complete imbeciles. The Focke Wulf completely outclassed the Bf-109E/F/Gs on every count except for being more expensive. Yet, the Nazis continued to press the Bf-109s in service as mainstay fighters. Ahtong 1st Gear August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 What the hell were they thinking? Boulton Paul Defiant - Fighter aircraft with bomber turret. This plane had no forward firing guns so it deadly if the enemy flew in behind one but a complete sitting duck in every other situation. ME163 Komet - Rocket propelled fighter with only a few seconds of fuel supply. Fast like a rocket when powered, sitting duck glider when out of gas. Yokosuka Ohka - Piloted flying bomb
Pocus Turbocharged August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 I love this thread!! I used to be very interested in jet fighters after I was introduced to this game Of course it took a few years for me to realise this is a non-existent fighter and the rumors are actually pointing to the F-117A Stealth Fighter A super chim flight simulator. very difficult to play but you get alot of fun. Anyone played these? It's only through these games I start to know various aircrafts and the armament they used. Was even toying on the idea to join the Airforce that time. I even cut out the recruitment article for "Airforce Engineer" without know what it actually does, just that it sounds cool! LOL

Happily1986 5th Gear August 18, 2011 Share August 18, 2011 Watch Area 88 here. The main protagonist here originally flew an A6E Corsair and later changed to a F5E Tiger. Area 88 Anime

The Focke Wulf SHOULD have been the mainstay fighter! The BF109 was extensively used because it's designer was kawan kawan with Nazi beauracracy. IIRC, BF109 is the best fighter of all time in terms of kills but it was also one of the sh1ttiest handling aircraft. Very ironic

Vulcann 6th Gear August 18, 2011 Author Share August 18, 2011 Didn't know there are so many WWII warbird kakis out there! Many of those military buffs I know all like modern jets like Typhoon, Rafale, Lightning II, etc but shun oldies. Always an oddball when I mentioned Hellcats, Zeroes or Flying Fortresses and they were like "huh?" Great to talk abt old times... For the record I prefer Bf/Me-109s over Fw-190s though the latter was superior in every sense & feared by allied pilots.

For the record I prefer Bf/Me-109s over Fw-190s though the latter was superior in every sense & feared by allied pilots. Some memorable planes in WW2 include 1.) Stuka dive bomber Ju 87 They were specially fitted with a siren that exaggerated their dive resonance to create terror in the hearts of their victims. 2.) de Havilland Mosquito DH 98. Very sleek silhouette, not just a looker but one of the fastest among its contemporaries. 3.) Flying Fortress B-29. Looks very proportional and graceful despite its size 4.) Ilyushin Il-2. Foremost tank buster 5.) A6M Zero. Tora tora tora! ↡ Advertisement
