Sk65 1st Gear August 17, 2011 Share August 17, 2011 hahaha no wonder the title sounds so familiar we watched the same show, same time hahahhaha sibeh steady that pilot On 8/16/2011 at 2:57 PM, Vulcann said: Now watching SH Ch401 Battle Stations on F15. My jaws dropped after watching this segment: An Israeli F15D collided with a A4 Skyhawk in 1983 & lost the right wing. The pilot did not know he lost a wing because of the leaked fuel obscuring his vision & managed to come out of a spin after engaging afteburner. Maintaining a higher than normal landing speed the couragrous pilot was able to land the damaged bird almost using up the entire runway. Only then he was able to inspect the damage & his reaction was that if he had knew what had happened he would have ejected with his navigator. Really incredible fighter!!! It remain the only fighter never to have been shot down by a bogey in any air-to-air combat. ↡ Advertisement

Pilot of 883 ejected to safety, but the pilot of 880 flew and landed the aircraft, sans 1/3 of it's right wing. It would not have been possible except for the fact that the flight control computer was able to help compensate for the instability introduced by the loss of 1/3 of right wing. Same for the F15, I believe if it wasn't for the fact that the F15's flight surfaces are partly controlled by the flight control computer, I doubt the Israeli pilot would have been able to fly it back. Did you mix that incident up with another involving 2 US navy fighter jets? 2 F14s also collided at the South China Sea, 1 ejected while the other limped all the way back to Paya Lebar AB with 1 wing. Also happened in the early 90s.

Both pilots survived and the crashed bird was recovered from the seabed. http://www.f-16.net/aircraft-database/F-16.../airforce/RSAF/

Alot of things about it was classified, so of course no pictures in the papers was allowed. Think I did get to see a pic of the jet with 1/3 of it's wing gone whenI was in the airforce tho. IIRC the wing was sliced off pretty cleanly by the other jet's vertical stabiliser. Actually, most AFs would rather their pilots ditch the jet and eject rather than try to fly the jet back in such a situation, reason being they would rather lose a jet which they can easily buy back than to lose a pilot, which is harder to find and takes years to train. Even in the case of 880, the pilot was explicitly ordered to ditch the jet and eject, but he refused. Fierce! Did they do anything to him after he came back? Even the F16CDs couldn't beat the A4SU in bombing and gunnery during our AF's Hotshot competition. But of course, when it came to dogfights, the F16s reigned supreme.
