Jim 1st Gear August 13, 2011 Share August 13, 2011 I will generally consider a dual citizen like her to be Singaporean enough but I always thought President's Scholarship is a very symbolic award and a role model for Singaporean students. What does this award mean? She is not even serving military service. I feel we Singaporeans are like that old 46 year old first wife of the government who stuck with them through the hard times when they were poor and now that they are rich and found fancy and young PRC mistresses and is starting to hiam how old and ugly we have become. http://forums.asiaone.com/showthread.php?t=41882 ↡ Advertisement

Seriously, you think these people care? I have a Chinaman colleague converted to be a Singaporean citizen...even went through National Service but he has zero loyalty to Singapore. He even told me if he wanted to migrate back to China....China would welcome him back with open arms.

I guess even those who are 100% born and breed in sg might also have no loyalty towards their own country.

In Singapore, Foreign born child can keep both the passports till the child reaches 21. I guess this is true with Singaporean children going outside. But if I lose it to a foreigner who just convert 5 years ago, speaks different, have mobile parents who can take flight easily in the same way they left their own country, I will ask - should I really be loyal anyway? Don't blame me (us) for not showing loyalty to our "beloved" singapore. 7, 8 years ago i would feel gulit for not showing my love/loyatly to singapore. Now....i don't give a damn. When time come i will uproot just like the "trend" import by FT.

I have a Chinaman colleague converted to be a Singaporean citizen...even went through National Service but he has zero loyalty to Singapore. He even told me if he wanted to migrate back to China....China would welcome him back with open arms. What to do, SAF and the government naively believe that by taking the oath, these foreigners converts will be loyal to the country. Like that everyone can go take oath and know government secrets. Seriously, we all know the real reasons why foreigners want to come here - to escape the economic conditions back home. Just like the pinyo in the NHC case, how much she'll earn as a clerk back home, or worst, would she even get a job back home? Will she even enjoy the standard of living back home? And do you think these people will be loyal when their minds are to get away from proverty? When better terms are available elsewhere, these people will run towards that direction. If one day PRC is more open and democratic, do you think these people will not want to go back? The conditions now are not ideal for them at the moment. Those that came here already enjoyed city living, now go back to cities like Shanghai where housing is equally expensive and most would not want to return back to the countryside. Moreover, PRC has such a huge population, there are not enough jobs to go around for everyone. Go back could mean jobless for some time and they've no lack of talents. You think those educated ones would want to go back and live in the countryside and farm? I've ex-colleagues who wanted to go back to their motherland. 6 months down the road, they're back here again. Reason - they can't take the stress of their jobs back home. Here if they're in the right gang, how shitty they are, also considered "talents". Back home, these "talents" mean nothing. And they're so used to the type of cushon job here, it won't be easy for them to survive in a sweatshop back home. Bystander50 5th Gear August 13, 2011 Share August 13, 2011 Her President's Scholarship will be terminated when she reached 21 year old and if she did not give up her china citizenship. How old is she now? If say when she reach 21, she's 2-3 years into her 5 year programme and she doesn't want to give up her citizenship, not a bad deal, she has covered 40-60% of the course fees under SG taxpayers' money. She just need to cough out the balance on her own which is a great deal. What can the gov do to her if she choose not to come back here? Shame her in the papers for all they want, no one will remember her face after a few years. for such cases, why didn't the government think of holding her parent's property as co-lateral. If she breaks the bond, the property will be seized, irregardless of what the value is. ↡ Advertisement
