Scion Turbocharged August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 sure, the riots in Britain seemed to be sparked off by the shooting of a criminal suspect by the police, but the massive looting and arson by angry youths, spread on such a fast scale helped by communications through blackberry, twitter and facebook, is on unprecedented level, not seen in the last 30 years... unlike the jasmine revolution in the middle east, this riot seems "harmless" as it's not politically motivated or even racially motivated... and that's the scary part.. realising how fragile a society can be... imagine the furious youths in Singapore went on a rampage, gangsters joining in from Geylang, and went looting in Orchard or setting fire at Suntec... scary to think of that ↡ Advertisement

We now take the peace & stability that we've achieved for granted and my worry is the way society has been divided since the GE, it'll happen again. Heck, it's already happening in s'pore cyberspace. Once the gov makes the citizens angry.......the repressed emotions will manifest itself in riots. Lucky I am staying in Singapore. Silver_blade Turbocharged August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 The recent unrest in Britain is probably the result of a generation of a society where many has almost no control over their kids and the kids in the neigbourhood. Parents gave their kids 'full' freedom from a very young age and the older folks have stopped ticking roundly youth off in the the street....afraid of being labelled as busy body and rude. Police's power has also been stripped over the years...so much so that, the Brits politicians will have to debate on their next move in a parliament...all this while, the police are left 'helpless' in dealing with the situation. If this has happened in the 70's or 80's.....I bet you will see parents pulling their kids off the street by their ears.

Gukubird Neutral Newbie August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 Chanced upon this article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14463452) He says while looting occurs in most riots, it has dominated this week and they could be called the "consumer society riots". "If you compare it to the riots in the 1980s, there's a lot more stuff you can loot easily, such as portable electronic gadgets, mobile phones and flatscreen TVs. "For a lot of looters, it's just opportunity but it also expresses a sense of how else am I going to get a hold of these things?" Prof Pitts says riots are complex events and cannot be explained away as "just thuggery". They have to be seen against the backdrop of "growing discontents" about youth unemployment, education opportunities and income disparities. He says most of the rioters are from poor estates who have no "stake in conformity", who have nothing to lose. "They have no career to think about. They are not 'us'. They live out there on the margins, enraged, disappointed, capable of doing some awful things." Those who got nothing to lose is the most fearful
Silver_blade Turbocharged August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 Society has changed. Even here...parents used to hit their kids all the time...then now you have the other extreme...no scolding or punishment at all. But we are also seeing those to take the 'middle' path of positive teaching and 'soft' punishment which may take a longer time and parents have to be very consistent to achieve results. But those kids on the streets in the unrest are probably youth-at-risk to begin with. Britain will have to deal with it at the root of the problem. I would like to see the gov stop giving underage single mother benefits that allow them to stay home. Some abused the system by getting pregnant. They should also have a re-look at their welfare system....to make sure to separate those who really need it and those who abused the system.

Those who got nothing to lose is the most fearful For a start...most youth will not want to work in fast food joints like they did in the 90's. Now such jobs are taken up by eastern europeans. Some of the youth are also asking for a lot more for a job but doing less work. There are also those whom parents are abusing the welfare system and teaching their kids how to do it. Some of those youth in the earlier riots were probably from very low income family whom parents may be drug addict or in prison, or in gangs.

Silver_blade Turbocharged August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 Teens & those 9, 10 hrs old who looted PS3, Wii, etc are economic driven & jobless? What are their parents doing to allow their young children on the street in an unrest? If this is not bad parenting, I don't know what is. Bad economy could be a reason but what happen when the UK economy was doing very well? I feel the greater problem is with the society in general. Most of the thugs are no longer afraid of the police after all, b'cos police seldom take tough action for fear of criticism from the public that they are high handed. ↡ Advertisement
