Super noob in ICE - what to start with?

am thinking about doing some slight upgrades to the sound system in my dc5, but have no idea what to start with. I suppose the first thing to do is to buy a better HU (maybe the 9887, but where to get it from now?) than the cheap pioneer I have now, but what after that? I'm really not looking at installing any woofers and if possible, amps as well, not in the short term at least. Is something like this doable? Or should I just stick with my stock setup and forget about doing any upgrades?

unless u got $ to burn then change a HU , but i suggest save up till u can afford the one u really like , trust me, else this thought will bug u ur entire time owning the vehicle.

u can try starting off by adding a monoblock and a decent woofer , and another amp to powerup ur speakers if they arent stock. , i suggest getting the packages as in the long run , it be cheaper if u planing on doing it all up.

else go for 1 monoblock , 1 woofer, the effect shld make u smile like never before.

Jus change to a slightly better Pioneer HU n front speaker, add one active sub under ur seat.. Tis shd meet ur slight upgrade.

For a start, can get a decent 2nd ones fr sgsound system forum.

If not, change ur speaker first to see if ok.. If not, then change HU. Last then add in active sub

My experience was that I start off with my speakers, front and rear. Then when got more money to burn, change the HU. This process is progressive and you got to be patient. Don't jump at every deal or thing you see. Go sgsoundsystems.com. There got a lot of information there. :D

...another amp to powerup ur speakers if they arent stock....

what is a good ratio to match the RMS power of the amp to the RMS power of the speakers? some people say that 2:1 is good. and what happens if the speaker RMS is 80W but the amp is only 40W?

Bro, getting into ICE is very very poisonous, be fore warned, as for ur question. H/U: Pioneer, good for RB, hip hopand all things boom boom, radio reception is better. Alpine: More for vocals, much better sound reproduction than Pioneer (IMHO). 9887 is a good start, it can go 2-way active, (Don ask me to explain 2-way active, 3-way active, passive or a combo) takes a long time, fingers will get numb. In ICE, trust ur ears and urs only, take the opionions with a pinch of salt. Go and audit and listen to systems installed, go to a reputable ICE shop, shop arnd, get some knowledge, or else standby for some big time carrot cutting excercise. Go for meet ups, go to sgsoundsystem of sgcaraudio, there are tons of info there. I would suggest u do ur homework first before changing anything at all, know what kind of music u like and work from there. As for me I rojak, depends on mood...My ICE: Alpine 501/701 (Processor) running 3-way active, Steg 402/203 (Driving my Seas Lotus and Morel 3") and Mosconi 300.2 (Driving my Morel Ultimo), Ramm cables, QED Supra speaker cables, front and booth customised with 2-layers of S/P, spare tyre thrown away.

The problem is most of us got no goood ears to listen to nice music.

Also the road noise will kill any good set-up while on the road.

So any decent set-up will be sufficient as long as a amplifier is used to generate loud enough sound level.

Not to forget. Sound insulation or sound proofing. Especially the front 2 doors. :D

It is do-able, it's just a matter of your budget. My suggestion is to change your speakers first because a lot of times it's the speakers that help to make a significant difference. You can try getting Rockford Fosgate speakers. They provide awesome bass response, ultra accurate mid-range and crystal clear highs while still remaining affordable and able to be powered by your headunit without additional amps. You can try getting the Rockford Fosgate P1652-S or the Rockford Fosgate T1652-S (you might need an amp to drive these). When you go test speakers, bring along a copy of Kenny G's Heart and Soul album because it enables you to test the lows, the mids and the highs of the speakers. If you don't have a copy there's always the internet to get you a free copy.

Anyway go check this out

I can bet with you that you won't be able to tell the difference between the original (kenny g) and a copy from the internet. So you're saying that songs downloaded of itunes cannot come close to actual CD recordings? Some artists only release digital singles. You calling these digital singles lousy? Maybe you're speaking this way cos you're unaware that there are lots of good rips out there. And yes i do know quite a bit about I.C.E, apparently you not so much, since you "picked the wrong soundproofing material".
