SINGAPORE: One candy shop at Clarke Quay decided to put an end to candy snatchers with a little help from social media.

Sticky Candy, which is located at The Central, caught a man stealing rock candy costing S$50 on their CCTV footage.

They then uploaded the video onto their Facebook page, where they have more than 96,000 fans.

The very next day, the man returned to the shop to confess his crime and pay up.

The shop said they have noticed a rise in the sticky situation with at least three or four people a week unable to control their need for a sugar rush.

Sticky Candy owner, Jamie Lim, said: "One of his family members told him it was him in the video and that he took a bottle of candy. It was causing quite an uproar on our fan page.

"Eventually he came down and he paid for it and he actually said that he did not have any intention to steal but rather he was distracted by his friend so I believed him and just let the matter go."

At first it might work..

But such shaming effect will lose it appeal.

The store will not sue over a few dollars candy lah. The police will say you left the door open so big is store own fault, go get magistrate order then talk.

Anyone knows or shame those CWO lately?

Neutral Newbie

I am not sure if it is good for people to be involved in public shamming. I just hope they won't lose customers in that way. But it is good idea to lessen the number of stolen items.

It's a good idea to have this kind of crime control that does not necessarily have to involve the police.

You can call it shaming, but it actually gives a chance for the wrong-doer to come forward, confess, make restitution, and be forgiven.

The alternative is to involve the police, and let the law take its course. This is like a sledgehammer to kill a fly.

Got use meh...one brother in MCF caught a car scratching fellow on video also can't do anything to him...

Actually shamming him works much better than the legal system here. Remember, after the news hits the papers n stomp, he contacted me to resolve it???

The whole legal system went one big round and came to naught. [mad]

erh residential house you leave door open police can say it is civil case but business is meant to keep door open how to say civil case and get magistrate order?

in any case, any form of stealing is not considered civil case in the eyes of the law.

i agree. the legal system is just meant for heavy crimes. those minor crimes or civil matter use law also no use.

recently i got a wayward tenant. talk to lawyer, find the law is pretty useless to deal with such things, bcos it is expensive game played by rich people only.
