Is it true that Blu ray player can play any DVD format, including pirated ones??

I saw Sony Blu ray selling for $239 in Best Denki. It can connect to iPhone for remote commander and it's wifi ready. Model S380

Now I know why iPhone is so good.... Lol.

I saw alot of devices are connected to iPhone these days.

I understand that Philips is more likely to play "non-original" discs rather than the Korean or Japanese brands...

Using iPhone and Android phones as a remote is quite gimmicky... this would be useful for Internet access, but I haven't found one that allows the use of the phone as a keyboard...

$449

Too ex Liao. The only difference is it can play games. The Sony Blu ray can do the other functions.

There is another upside if you buy PS3 as a bluray player, when there are firmware updates there could be new functions. Like previously there was no 3D support when there was no 3D available in the market, but when there was, a firmware was released to allow it to play.

If you do a search online and check reviews, it is eventually still the best value for money.

I own both a PS3 slim and a Sony S370 Blu-ray player.....

The PS3 is dedicated for gaming purposes whilst I'm using the S370 as my media player....

Reason for keeping the two separate is that I try not to over-tax my PS3 since on marathon gaming nites, my PS3 can be on for 4 ~ 6 hours continuously and if I add playing blu-rays and what-nots to it, I'm afraid of "wearing out" my PS3.

And having own both a PS3 and a standalone BDP, I still find the PS3 to be a better piece of equipment as it is extremely versatile. I paid $445 for my PS3 and my S370 cost me $299...... and the $146 difference is really negligible consider how much more versatility the PS3 offers...

One key thing to note about moving into the blu-ray format is having to upgrade your firmware...... this is because if you don't upgrade the firmware whenever updates are available, you run the risk of not being able to play the full content of newer discs.... hence connectivity is the key..... and the PS3 allows you to connect to your network wirelessly which makes updating the firmware very very convenient.

My S370 only allows wireless connection if u use a proprietary wireless receiver from Sony but I get round that by using a homeplug receiver. And another benefit of connecting to the network is that I could watch Youtube using my S370 now.... but with the PS3, you could even surf the net with it.

All things considered, I would recommend going with a Sony blu-ray player (be it PS3 or even a standalone) given the Sony developed the blu-ray format and I never ever had any issue with firmware upgrades or playing any of the blu-ray content.

I got this model too.

The down side is the wireless LAN adaptor.

ONLY CAN USE SONY USB wireless adaptor. $150+ and quick hard to get this adaptor.

But the streaming is good.

The only reason I bought a SONY blue ray player is that they invented Blue Ray.

(edited)

most blu ray player can play any region DVD (even region ZERO)

but blu ray players are usually region locked for blu rays

the big consideration is that once start with Blus, you will not bother going back to DVDs liao. I did a lot of research on which player upconverts DVD to HD the best cos I got a big collection of DVDs. after I bot the player I basically converted my collection to blu. once you drive 4L car, you will not go back to 1.5L!!!

The Sony Blu ray can only use Sony wireless adaptor? I can't use any other brands?
