Jchuacl Clutched August 10, 2011 Share August 10, 2011 Some stalls that I like but it appears that the owners passed away. For eg, the curry puff stall at old rex theatre. There were 3 different stalls (old chang kee was one of them), and the one I like most suddenly failed to open 1 day and was forever gone. The taste was something like that to tip top but was bette tasting. ↡ Advertisement

The owners, assuming it's husband and wife team. The son is only one person. To do purchasing, preparation and cooking it's a very tough job. And to profit like $1-2 per pax he has to work around the clock everyday just to make ends meet. Very easy to criticise on your part but have you been in his shoes? All you do is pay and eat. The son can also criticise you. I also know that a lot of the first gen hawkers get subsidized rental from govt. By the time the son take over I think no more subsidize. Most likely full rate which will only add to his burden. Sometimes it's not the children who do not want to continue the business. It's the circumstances that are stopping them. If they go outside and work they can easily get better pay than being a hawker. Sometimes one man show it's very difficult to do everything on his own. Cant even go toilet. He helps put Everyday in the store but don’t do cooking leh.... dunno what he intends to do after his parents retire....

I'm saying it's easy for you to criticise the son that you see. Not everyone's strength is in cooking. It's not a skill that he can inherit easily from the parents. What's his future...it is up to him. No need to judge him. ↡ Advertisement
