Govt affirms aim to involve more S'poreans in developing ideas & policies

By Evelyn Choo | Posted: 16 July 2011 0011 hrs

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has affirmed the government's aim to involve more Singaporeans in developing ideas and policies that affect them.

He hopes Singaporeans will respond in the same spirit.

Mr Lee was speaking at the official opening of the School of the Arts (SOTA) on Friday.

Mr Lee cited the example of an ongoing strategic review of the arts sector.

The Arts and Culture Strategic Review involves the public, private and people sectors, with the goal of mapping out Singapore's cultural landscape by 2025.

The aim is to get four in five Singaporeans to attend at least one arts and cultural event each year by 2025.

Mr Lee called on members of the arts community, including SOTA's students, to contribute to the thought process.

He said: "The review and the committee will consult students widely. We will conduct focus group sessions, we will launch an online consultation portal.

"We would like to have your ideas of what you would like to do, how you would like us to go about building this arts scene for the future, strategically, patiently, starting now."

Congratulating SOTA on its official opening, Mr Lee said the school is an example of how the country is opening up multiple paths to different talents.

SOTA is Singapore's first national pre-tertiary arts school.

It offers a six-year curriculum that integrates arts and academia for youths aged 13 to 18 years.

We give suggestions, feedback on current policy. Many a time we are not just complaining just for the sake of complaining, it's genuine problems and provide solutions.

BUT every time they heard our feedback, they insist their policy is correct, any other solutions will not work. Refuse to make any changes and do things the way they want. So does it make any difference when we voice out? They will find 101 reasons to justify how good their policy is.

Wishful thinking.

Talk about touchy subjects, they say out of bounds

Give comments they don't want to hear, they say only constructive criticism please

Point out a mistake that cannot be refuted, they say can you do better?

Those in blue not sure but will try.

As for those in white, NO WAY...

Had seen enough of their fake facade, heard enough of empty promises & feeble defence of lousy policies.

If not for the brave assault of the oppo candidates which resulted in 6 record seats being wrangled from these blokes & also slicing off part of their winning margin as compared to previous GEs, do you thk the PM would have apologised & now earnestly coming out with all these "listen to the grd" talks?

Oh brother...

When he suka suka approve staff for MM and emeritus sm, did he seek opinion of citizens? So much for involving citizens, must be tokin about RC members Only

I mean if he wana upkeep them using his pay then by all means go ahead & we will clap & cheer.

Different story if tax-payer money is used to do that.

And enough of all the talk of their continued-contribution to Singapore.

They will do the PM & his ruling party a big favour by keeping quiet & perform their duties as a full-fledged MP whom their constituents voted for & rightfully deserved to be served, instead of flying off constantly & never attended a MPS for god knows how long already.

Contribution nowadays?

Yes if you include the "repent" statement or the "minister shd not serve more than 2-term" statement...

To us with such a high cost of living society, earning a living & bringing home the beacon tops anything other thngs.

Besides, we have barely time to make babies and they envisioned us going to this art/culture events?

Come on...

someone should tell Harry Jr that art and sex can go hand in hand.... hushand n wife can start with 'art' movie, than go home together and plug themselves into national production programme in their bedroom.

joke aside, LHL aka Harry Jr should show some real actions what he means by 'listening' to the people.... so far, what has he got to show as solid actions/results? :o
