the main problem is that our public transport is so under-developed compared to population & economic growth such that many still rely on cars due to no better alternative, then as a result the COE system inflated car costs sky high, pushing up our inflation rate & causing everything else to go up in price... how the garmen can just keep quiet abt this & keep using strong currency to fight inflation... bloody irresponsible

coe system is to reduce congestion to increase productivity, but wats the point when transport cost is getting higher? LPPL

The clueless scholars listen to and defer too much to the industry heavyweights hoping what advice they get is good for the market.

As it turns out no profit making company will give consultation to make less profit.

Biggest mistake of this govt is to ask industry for feedback. [hur]

Those who are not rich and need car, go JB and live there. Can afford cars and cheaper housing and can retire in JB nursing homes.

Spore could be left for the rich + wealthy foreigners (to replace those financially forced to go JB).

Ya!During my time also no choice.

coe so expensive,second-hand car also expensive.Bro-in-law brought a new corolla for 120k(still need 30% down-payment. :o

In the end choose to renew 10yr coe.

40+k(renew coe) & 10+k(parf value) works out 50+k or 5k deprication still cheaper.

People down-payment for new car,me down-payment for coe re-newal & take a 3yr coe loan,so sad! [laugh]

WoW! That's cool what. Will probably what I'll do come 2014 when my current COE expires. Any lobang for this? What was your interest rate for a loan on COE back then?

Turbocharged

i think many people complain that public transport is not good enough and so they have to drive, is just bull sheet. truth is, no matter how good the public transport is, it is the personal aspiration of everyone to own cars.

There is one issue though - and I don't have a "fair" solution for it.

Market forces always tend to favour the rich rather than those that will get the most benefit.

So what its posssible to end up with is one family (lets say mum, dad + two uni age children) that have the means, owning three cars - while you get another family of mum+dad+two kids+parent /s without a car.

While this is "fair" in terms of the first family being able to pay getting the benefit, the second family is left out in the cold - and consequently there is a lot of stuff that simply is not open to them. Even something simple - like going canoeing at Seletar resevoir becomes a mission if you are limited to public transport, whereas if you have a car it is easy. SO there will be a lot of stuff that some families are missing out on - which will create a further divide between rich and poor.

Why not a simple ballot as opposed to an auction (bidding)?

That would be the 'fairest'. Does away with injustices and complications associated with attributing by...

- 'wealth'. Why should the rich get more of this national resource (road space)?

- 'need'. Difficult to arbitrate one family's need as more urgent over another?
